    But, after news of Scarborough's "Scarbados" nickname reached the Caribbean Island, it has emerged that discussions are taking place to strengthen ties between the two...

    The former High Commissioner of Barbados, Guy Hewitt, has told the BBC that there are more similarities than people might think between the two places.

    Mr Hewitt said the authorities in Barbados are continuing to look at opportunities to officially twin with the North Yorkshire town.

    He said: "We're trying to see what the opportunities are to strengthen links between Scarborough and Barbados, to make the Scarbados project real, so that we can move in the short-term towards a formal twinning."

    A woman has been taken to hospital by Air Ambulance after the car she was driving left the road and rolled 25m down a hill in West Yorkshire.

    Emergency services were called to the A62 Manchester Road in Marsden earlier after reports of a car leaving the road.

    The vehicle landed upright, trapping the occupant who then had to be released from the car by fire and rescue crews.

    She was then airlifted to hospital, according to West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

    Her condition is currently unknown.

  4. Search for missing climbers could take '10 days'published at 12:32 British Summer Time 5 June 2019

    Indian authorities say it will most likely take about 10 days to recover the bodies of five missing climbers believed to have been killed in an avalanche high in the Himalayas, government and police officials have said.

    Four Britons - including Dr Richard Payne from the University of York - two Americans, an Australian and an Indian made up the missing climbers, who had been attempting India's second-highest peak, Nanda Devi.

    The officials said authorities will conduct another aerial reconnaissance on Thursday or Friday to find a way to reach the bodies of the missing climbers or send a team on foot after the team has had time to acclimatise.

    There is a possibility of another avalanche which is a big risk to the operation, an official from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police told the media.

    A recovery mission which included three helicopter sorties earlier today faced technical problems.

    The missing climbers have not been heard from since 26 May, a day before an avalanche hit the 7,816m-high mountain.

    Police are hunting a convicted burglar from Salford who is wanted on recall to prison.

    Scott Taylor, 25, who is also known as Scott Walker, was freed from prison in February after being jailed for burglary in 2018 - but has since breached the terms of his release.

    He is known to have links to Bolton, Morecambe and Keighley in West Yorkshire.

    Plans to knock down and rebuild a well-known Grade II-listed pub in Hull near to its current site are to be scrutinised by councillors later.

    The Earl De Grey would make way for a major new nine-storey development, including a restaurant, cafe, bar and offices.

    The owners say the plan - which is recommended for conditional approval - is the only option available for the site because of serious structural issues.

    Inquests have been opened into the deaths of two teenage boys who died after an incident at a house in Sheffield last month.

    Tristen and Blake Barrass, aged 13 and 14, died in hospital after police were called to a semi-detached house in the Shiregreen area of the city on 24 May.

    Their mother, Sarah Barrass, and 38-year-old Brandon Machin have been charged with their murder and are due to go on trial later this year.

    Inquests into the boys' deaths opened at Sheffield Coroner's Court earlier.

    Tristen Barrass was pronounced dead at 09:14 that morning and Blake Barrass died 12 minutes later, the inquest has heard.

    No cause of death was given at the inquest and coroner Christopher Dorries said he was not in a position to release the bodies for funerals.

  11. New play celebrates Hull's 'amazing' silent movie starpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 5 June 2019

    A play celebrating the life of an actress from Hull who was one of the stars of the silent film era is being performed in her home city this week.

    Dorothy Mackaill was born in Hull in 1903 and went to Thoresby Primary School before running away from home as a teenager to become an actress.

    She went on to become of the biggest movie stars in the world, performing opposite Clark Gable and Humphrey Bogart.

    When she returned to visit Hull in the 1930s, hundreds of people lined the streets to see her, although these days her name is largely forgotten.

    But now, her life and achievements are being celebrated in The Remarkable Tale of Dorothy Mackaill at Hull New Theatre.

    Writer and director Elizabeth Godber said: "She was a definitely an amazing woman for the time.

    "She was a very early feminist and that appealed to me, a woman making her own way in the past is not a story we always hear and I think that's important to bring out."

    Manor Property, which owns the derelict building, wants to build 40 flats and a restaurant on the St Andrews' dock site.

    The firm says refurbishing the former trawler company offices is not an option because of serious structural issues.

    A motorcyclist has suffered life-threatening injuries after leaving the road and crashing into a hedge in an East Yorkshire village.

    The man was riding on Balne Moor Road, in Pollington, near Goole, when he was thrown from his white and blue Suzuki GSXR 750 motorbike.

    Humberside Police said the man is currently in hospital and his condition has not improved since the collision on 25 May.

    Officers want to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the motorbike prior to the crash.

    Firefighters say there were no passengers on board a double-decker bus when it caught fire on the M1 this morning.

    Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway near to Junction 25 shortly before 08:00 after vehicle caught fire.

    At one stage all northbound traffic was held while firefighters tackled the blaze, causing queues of up to six miles.

    South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue said there were no reports of injuries.

    All lanes are now open.

    Concern is growing for a 14-year-old boy who has been reported missing.

    Police say Hung Manh Hoang was last seen on Waterdale, in the Bransholme area of Hull, at about 18:00 on Monday.

    Officers say they are "very concerned for his safety."

    The teenager is described as being of Vietnamese origin, 5ft 6in tall and of slim build.

    He was last seen wearing a blue denim jacket, a black t-shirt, blue jeans and black trainers.

    Anyone who has seen him is being urged to contact police immediately.

    North Yorkshire Police has appealed for drivers to watch their speed after officers recorded a vehicle driving at 109mph in a 60mph zone.

    Its Skipton-based Safety Camera Officer recorded the incident on a single-lane stretch of A65 over the weekend.

    The force is appealing to drivers to drive and ride responsibly.

    It says: "As the warm weather continues and the traffic is heavier than normal, please drive/ride responsibly."

    A diary belonging to Britain's most famous hangman, Albert Pierrepoint, is due to be auctioned today.

    Pierrepoint, from Clayton, near Bradford, executed approximately 600 people in a 25-year career that ended in 1956, including 13 German war criminals in one day, for crimes committed at Belsen and Auschwitz.

    Other items, including a plaster cast of his face and hands and a silver watch chain he wore during executions are also being sold.

    The collection is estimated to fetch between £20,000 and £25,000 when it goes under the hammer at Boldon Auction Galleries, in East Boldon.

    In March 1950 Pierrepoint hanged Timothy Evans for the murder of his daughter and suspected murder of his wife.

    It was later discovered that Evan’s neighbour John Christie had committed the crimes and Evans was posthumously pardoned in 1966.

    When asked about this Pierrepoint said: “You mustn’t get involved in whatever crime they’ve committed.

    "The person has to die.

    "You’ve got to treat them with as much respect and dignity as you can."

    Traffic on the M1 is moving again after a bus fire brought the northbound carriageway to a complete standstill.

    The fire, which has now been extinguished, broke out on the vehicle near to Junction 35 shortly before 08:00.

    One lane remains closed and traffic is still queuing back to junction 33.

    There are reports of six-mile tailbacks on the northbound carriageway after the double-decker caught fire close to junction 35.

    Highways England's website shows traffic queuing back to junction 33 at Sheffield.

    Southbound traffic is also being affected as smoke is blown across the carriageway.

    South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue are attending, according to Highways England.
