    This is the latest picture from J34 of the M1 northbound near Tinsley, which remains closed following a three-vehicle crash:

    Areas around Tinsley, Rotherham and Meadowhall are heavily congested.

    Drivers have been warned to avoid the area.

    Screens have been put up around the scene while police continue with their investigation.

    The road is expected to remain closed until about 18:00.

  2. Heeco: 47 jobs lost as Hull company enters administrationpublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 7 June 2019

    An electrical engineering company in Hull which was founded more than 100 years ago has entered administration with the loss of 47 jobs.

    Heeco specialised in electrical design and had worked with the Ministry of Defence, but it ceased trading this week.

    The administrators say Heeco faced "severe financial pressures" in recent months.

    A proposed purchaser had been identified, but after several weeks of due diligence interest was withdrawn on Monday.

    Joint administrator Andy Haslam said: “Every effort was made to save the company in recent weeks, however with no prospect of a purchase, the only remaining option was to close the business.

    "We are now working with the stakeholders to support all affected employees at what we know will be an extremely difficult period."

  4. Damaged Shipley soldiers' graves were 'targeted' - Policepublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 7 June 2019

    Soldiers' graves which were destroyed at a burial ground in West Yorkshire were deliberately targeted, police say.

    Six memorials were vandalised at Hirst Wood burial ground in Shipley, sometime between Monday and Tuesday.

    Officers are now carrying out investigations at the scene.

    Staff from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission are making emergency repairs to the graves.

    They've added temporary name plates until the memorials can be mended.

    Investigation work is continuing on the M1 near Sheffield following a three-vehicle accident earlier.

    The road is currently closed between J34 A631 Tinsley Viaduct (Meadowhall) and J35 A629 Cowley Hill (Rotherham/Chapeltown).

    There's currently congestion to J33 (Catcliffe) which is also causing delays on the A630 Sheffield Parkway on the approach to J33.

    The closure is expected to remain in place until early evening.

    Work has begun on £45m flood defence project in York.

    The Environment Agency says the Flood Alleviation scheme should improve protection for 2,000 properties across the city by 2021.

    The work is being carried out following severe flooding in the city in 2015.

    This first phase is taking place between Leeman Road and North Street.

    The project includes increasing the height of the flood gate under Lendal Bridge and building new flood walls between Westgate apartments and York City Rowing Club.

    The work is due to be completed by 2021.

    The M1 northbound is not expected to reopen until about 18:00 following a three-vehicle crash near Sheffield this morning.

    The carriageway is currently closed northbound between junctions 34 and 35 as a result of the collision which happened near the Tinsley Viaduct at about 08:20.

    Highways England said: "Due to the complex nature of the ongoing police investigation, the estimated time to reopen is now 18:00."

  12. Peregrine falcon chicks hatch at Dales beauty spotpublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 7 June 2019

    Four peregrine falcon chicks have hatched at a North Yorkshire beauty spot.

    The Malham Peregrine Project says: "After some careful observations, we can now confirm that there are four chicks!

    "There appears to be two that are larger than the others and can be seen popping up to have a look around."

    The chicks have hatched high up on Malham Cove, with adult birds being spotted carrying food to a nest site there this week.

    Peregrines have a history of being persecuted in the Dales, but this marks at least the 22nd time a pair has hatched chicks at Malham since the birds returned there in 1993.

    RSPB Area Manager Anthony Hills said: “It won’t be long before these chicks are ready to take their first tentative flights."

    Peregrines are the fastest animals in the world and are believed to achieve speeds approaching 124mph when plunging from the sky after prey.

    The University of York is to launch a £120m fundraising campaign to tackle what it describes as "some of the most pressing global challenges".

    The York Unlimited campaign aims to use 120,000 volunteer hours to target issues such as job-creation, education, and mental health.

    It says it also wants to "capture the insights" of York graduates who can help improve things around the world, as well as enhance the UK's creative economy.

    A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman died after being stabbed in Halifax.

    Officers were called to Cumberland Close at about 05:30 this morning where they found a 23-year-old woman who was seriously hurt.

    She was taken to hospital but died later from her injuries.

    Det Supt Nicola Bryar said: "Clearly people will be shocked by the nature of this incident and we are doing all we can to provide additional support and reassurance to the local community."

    Murder detectives are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

    Singer-songwriter Emeli Sande will perform in Hull later this year, it has been announced.

    The pop star, who famously performed at the opening and closing ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympics, will play the Bonus Arena in December.

    Writing on Twitter, staff at the venue said: "With over 340m video views, 19m singles sold and over 6m albums, Emeli Sande has captured the heart of the nation."

  16. West Yorkshire racer Harrison wins Isle of Man TT Seniorpublished at 12:11 British Summer Time 7 June 2019

    West Yorkshire motorcycle racer Dean Harrison has won the Isle of Man Senior TT for the first time.

    It's the third TT win for the Bradford-born rider, adding to his maiden victory in the Lightweight Supertwins in 2014 and a victory in the Supersports last year.

    He also has nine second-place finishes to his name, but this is the first time he has finished first in the much-coveted Senior TT:

    Traffic which has been trapped on the M1 following a three-vehicle crash near Sheffield this morning is clearing quicker than initially expected.

    Highways England had said it would take about two hours to remove cars trapped on the northbound carriageway.

    But police are now allowing traffic to get past the scene of the crash, which happened near to the Tinsley Viaduct at about 08:20.

    Highways England now says trapped traffic should clear shortly, although the estimated time for the full reopening of the road is not until 16:00.

    The M1 is currently closed northbound between junctions 34 and 35 and motorists are being advised to avoid the area. A signed diversion route is in place.

    Police and officials from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) are now at a Shipley burial ground after vandals smashed soldiers' gravestones there:

    The gravestones were vandalised at Hirst Wood burial ground sometime between Monday and Tuesday, ahead of commemorations to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

    The CWCG said it was "deeply upset" by the vandalism of the graves, which include those of men killed in both world wars.

    Temporary name plates will be put in place, while the graves are mended, the CWCG has said.

    Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

    A North Yorkshire knitting group has donated hand-made teddy bears to the police, which will be used help comfort traumatised children.

    The Knit and Knatter group in Carleton made the “Bobby Buddies” for youngsters who have experienced distressing incidents, ranging from domestic violence to serious road traffic collisions.

    The "amazing" bears were presented to Andrew Ingram, a North Yorkshire Police traffic officer based in Craven.

    On Twitter, he said he had a "great morning meeting these wonderful ladies who are doing fantastic things for children involved in serious collisions and crime".

    The M1 northbound is expected to remain closed until about 16:00 following a three-vehicle crash near Sheffield this morning, according to Highways England.

    The M1 is currently closed Northbound between junctions 34 and 35 and motorists are being advised to avoid the area. A signed diversion route is in place.

    Meanwhile, Highways England say it is working to free those cars trapped on the carriageway but warned that could take up to two hours.
