    A man has been knocked down by a vehicle and attacked by men armed with machetes in Huddersfield, say police.

    The 26-year-old man was attacked at about 19:40 last night at the junction of Halton Close and Southfield Road.

    He was taken to hospital following the incident but his injuries are not believed to be serious.

    West Yorkshire Police have appealed for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

    A road closed after a water main burst in York will stay shut until the weekend.

    It's happened on Walmgate in the city centre yesterday morning.

    Yorkshire Water say the cause of the burst pipe has not been found yet.

    The incident appears to have left a number of cracks in the road surface and has caused damage to the pavement.

    A pedestrian who died after being hit by a car in Leeds has been named by police.

    Shane Grimes, 30, from Bramley, died after he was struck by the vehicle in Stanningley Road at its junction with Armley Grange Drive, at about 23:00 on Saturday night.

    The car, a blue Skoda Fabia, was travelling away from the city towards the Stanningley bypass at the time, West Yorkshire Police said.

    The driver, a 20-year-old old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and later released under investigation.

  4. UK's 'worst speeder' caught doing 162mph in Yorkshirepublished at 09:59 British Summer Time 16 July 2019

    A driver was caught travelling at 162mph on th M1 in South Yorkshire, the fastest speed recorded across the whole of the UK in 2018.

    According to figures obtained by road safety charity Brake, four of the ten fastest speeds recorded were measured on roads in Yorkshire, with one motorist caught driving 152mph in a 50mph zone on the M62.

    In total 2252 motorists were caught driving at speeds in excess of 100mph by West Yorkshire Police, up from 345 the previous year.

    Meanwhile, 19 motorists were caught driving at speeds in excess of 100mph by South Yorkshire Police last year and 156 in the area covered by Humberside Police.

    North Yorkshire Police did not respond to the charity's Freedom of Information request.

    Nationally, a total of 9,596 motorists were clocked doing over 100mph prompting Brake to call for anyone caught driving at this speed to be automatically banned.

    Joshua Harris, director of campaigns for Brake, said: “We have to make sure these dangerous, selfish drivers are taken off our roads."

  5. Dewsbury man saw 'astonishing' Moon launchpublished at 09:35 British Summer Time 16 July 2019

    A man from West Yorkshire who travelled to the US to see the launch of the first manned flight to the moon has said it was a privilege to witness the "mind-boggling" feat.

    John Blackburn, from Dewsbury, a lifelong space fan, said he saw a "splash of flame" under the Apollo 11 rocket on ignition.

    He said he could vividly remember the moment it rose into the sky - and still has a suitcase full of memorabilia.

    The build-up to the 50th anniversary of the mission this week had brought memories flooding back, he said.

    Mr Blackburn, from Dewsbury, who was 29 at the time, said he thought the Apollo 11 project was "absolutely astonishing".

    Police are advising people to allow longer for their morning journeys in Leeds this morning as environmental campaigners continue to block a major route into the city for a second day.

    Extinction Rebellion campaigners are blocking Victoria Bridge, near Bridgewater Place.

    Tents and a yellow boat have been set up in the road to stop traffic getting through.

    The group says the UK must act immediately to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.

    The government announced in June it would commit to reaching net zero emissions by 2050.

    The West Yorkshire Police force says it aims to "manage people's right to protest, balanced with the public's right to go about their daily business, with minimal impact on those living, working and visiting Leeds."

    Pupils and staff at a North Yorkshire school at the centre of a hepatitis A outbreak are to be vaccinated against the illness after the number of cases in the Ripon area rose to 29.

    Of the 29 cases at least 20 have now been confirmed at Outwood Academy in Ripon, with seven further cases in the wider community, according to Public Health England (PHE).

    In a letter to staff and parents the school says: "PHE is continuing to investigate and monitor the ongoing outbreak of hepatitis A in Ripon.

    "In order to reduce the chance of further transmission it's been recommended that hepatitis A vaccinations are offered to all our pupils and staff ahead of the school holiday."

    A vaccination session will take place at Outwood Academy later today.

    The school says: "It’s important for everyone who is offered vaccination to take it up, for their individual protection and to try and prevent further spread of the infection."

    Hepatitis A is passed from person to person by eating food or drinking water containing the virus.

    Symptoms of the illness are similar to flu and include mild fever, joint and muscle pain.

    The vehicle was travelling on the southbound carriageway, but then crossed over and overturned onto the Northbound lane.

    Tributes have been paid to the former Hull Lord Mayor, Nadine Fudge, who has died after a short illness.

    Mrs Fudge, who served as Lord Mayor in 2013, died on Saturday.

    Hull City Council Chief Executive, Matt Jukes, posted on Twitter: "So very sad to hear about Nadine's passing - she was a very dedicated public servant, totally committed to her residents and our city.

    "She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her and my thoughts are with her family and friends."

    Current Lord Mayor of Hull, Steve Wilson, said: "I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of my Labour council colleague and friend and ex-Lord Mayor Nadine Fudge.

    "We have lost a remarkable woman, politician and friend."

    A Sheffield school are appealing for help to try and find their defibrillator after it disappeared.

    The device normally sits inside a key-coded box outside Hunter's Bar Junior School on Sharrow Vale Road.

    But the school is now asking for people's help in getting the £1,000 life-saving machine back after the door of the box was found open.

    "We hope that it has saved someone's life and just has not been returned yet," the school wrote on Facebook.

    The device has been used about 10 times since being installed just over a year ago.

    Most times it's only a precaution, but the defibrillator pads have been used twice trying to save members of the public.

    Children at the school raised money for the machine, as well as the upkeep and maintenance needed to keep it in action.

    A new £9m factory, which turns plastic bottles into carpet underlay, has been opened in Bradford.

    Princess Anne officially opened the site near Cutler Heights earlier, which will be used by Huddersfield manufacturers Texfelt.

    The factory has been part-paid for with funds from Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, a partnership between local authorities and businesses.
