  1. Man fined after Sheffield tram-train crashpublished at 12:19 British Summer Time 12 August 2019

    A man has pleaded guilty to driving through a red light and crashing his HGV into a brand new tram-train in Sheffield.

    The crash happened on Staniforth Road on 25 October, the first day the new tram-train service operated.

    Kevin Hague, 61, of Duncan Street, Rotherham, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court and pleaded guilty to the offence.

    The prosecution said it wouldn't offer any evidence on a second charge of careless driving.

    The tram-train had about 80 passengers on board when Hague’s lorry ran through the traffic lights where the rails cross Staniforth Road in Sheffield, hitting it and derailing it.

    Several passengers were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

    Hague was fined £250 and given three penalty points.

    Police investigating the disappearance of a 15-year-old Vietnamese girl in York have charged a man with child abduction.

    The 15-year-old, who speaks no English, went missing from her tour group in York last week.

    She was last seen with an Asian man on the city walls above Station Rise at 16:40 on 6 August, police say.

    Officers say a 25-year-old man has been charged with child abduction and facilitating a breach of immigration laws and is due to appear at York Magistrates' Court later.

    Seven other people who were arrested in connection with the case have been released under investigation while inquiries continue, police add.

    As part of the investigation, warrants have since been executed in the Staffordshire area and a further two people, a man and a woman, have been arrested there, according to North Yorkshire Police.

    They remain in police custody.

    Investigations continue into her disappearance and police are appealing for any information which could help find her.

    A cyclist who was seriously injured in a collision with a lorry in Hull has died, it's been confirmed.

    The 55-year-old man, who was hurt in the crash which happened on Anlaby Road at about 16:30 on Thursday 25 July, died last Wednesday, according to police.

    His family has thanked members of the public who stopped and helped at the time, as well as staff at Hull Royal Infirmary and the other emergency services.

    No arrests have been made in connection with the incident, police say.

    An investigation is continuing in York after eight people were arrested last week as part of a search for a missing teenage Vietnamese tourist.

    The 15-year-old, who speaks no English, went missing from her tour group in York last week.

    She was last seen with an Asian man on the city walls above Station Rise at 16:40 on 6 August.

    North Yorkshire Police say the man she was last seen with is aged about 20 and was dressed in a dark top and a black baseball-style cap.

    Police said: "Officers are growing increasingly concerned for her safety and are appealing to the public for information as to her whereabouts. It is believed that she could be anywhere in the country."

    A driver crashed a car into a wall and jumped over gardens as he tried to get away from police officers in Sheffield at the weekend, it's emerged.

    The incident happened in the High Green area at about 05:30 on Sunday, when the driver of a VW Golf didn't stop for police.

    After crashing his car on School Road, the man jumped through gardens.

    After being cornered by police officers, the driver became aggressive, South Yorkshire Police said.

    He was eventually detained with help from a police dog, according to the force.

    A funeral procession for Hull-born entertainer Joe Longthorne is due to be held in his home city later.

    The singer and impressionist died just over a week ago. A statement on his website said he died in the arms of his husband Jamie.

    His body was brought back to Hull yesterday and the procession is expected to start at 11:00 before travelling down Hessle Road, Coltman Street and several streets in west Hull.

    He'll be buried in Blackpool tomorrow.

    Les Dennis has tweeted, external that Longthorne was "a supreme talent and a nice man", while Cold Feet actor John Thomson said, external he was a "great entertainer".

    An investigation is continuing this morning after an arson attack in West Yorkshire left a 17-year-old boy in a "serious condition" in hospital.

    Emergency services were called to a house on Stonedene Court, Heckmondwike, Kirklees, at about 04:10 on Sunday.

    Four people in the house managed to escape the fire by jumping from upstairs windows, with the teenage boy suffering burns and an injury from jumping.

    West Yorkshire Police said the attack was being treated as attempted murder.

    A woman and two girls, aged 16 and 11, needed treatment for the effects of breathing in smoke.

    Det Supt Mark Swift said: "This is clearly a very serious incident in which a male has suffered burn injuries and three females have also suffered smoke inhalation.

    "It took place at a time of night when a family were at home sleeping and could quite easily have had fatal consequences for those inside.

    "We are treating this incident as an attempted murder and I am appealing to members of the public for information."
