Miles of tailbacks are being reported heading into the city after the crash, which is between the M1 and A6102 Prince of Wales Road.
People are being asked to avoid the area as emergency services deal with the incident.
The Army bomb squad has been called to a road in Sheffield following reports of "suspicious items" being found in the street.
Police were called at about 12:20 this afternoon to reports of the items on Herries Road, Norwood.
It's thought the items are railway detonators which are used by rail staff to warn maintenance workers of approaching trains.
They "are not believed to pose a risk to the public", according to South Yorkshire Police.
A cordon is in place as a precautionary measure, the force adds.

Councils across South Yorkshire are still paying off millions of pounds of debt accrued by the long-abolished South Yorkshire County Council, it has emerged.
In April, the four local authorities - Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster - paid more than £17m off the outstanding debt of the former metropolitan council, which was disbanded more than 30 years ago.
A final payment of nearly £20m is due to be made in April 2020.
A spokesperson for Rotherham Council, which administers the repayments, said: "Early repayment was not in taxpayers’ interest as this would have resulted in an early payment penalty charge, which would be significant on a debt this size."
A North Yorkshire woman has marked the anniversary of a crash in which she was paralysed by holding a party.
Lauren Doherty, 31, from Knaresborough, suffered a broken neck after she was hit by a van on 11 August 2008 after a night out with friends.
Lauren (pictured, middle), who is now a road safety campaigner, marks the anniversary every year to celebrate what she has achieved.
She said: "It is a way of thanking those around me for all they have done for me."

The 41-year-old victim was taken to hospital by paramedics after he was found on Swinegate at 09:10 yesterday with serious head injuries.
British Transport Police said a two men, aged 39 and 38, from Leeds have been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.
Det Insp Mick Dawes said: “Leading up to the assault we believe there was a verbal altercation between the victim and a number of other men close to Hot Stuff takeaway on Swinegate.
“I urge anyone who may have witnessed this or the assault to get in touch with us as soon as possible."
Two men who may have witnessed a fatal crash in Sheffield are being asked to get in touch with police.
Celia Jackson, 89, died after she was hit by a car on Shiregreen Road at about 09:55 on 31 July.
South Yorkshire Police have released a CCTV image of two men who were stood outside the Late Shopper on Wincobank Avenue at about the time crash happened.
The force said the men had walked past the scene of the collision and has appealed for them come forward as they may hold important information.

Jordan Andrewatha is wanted on recall to prison after breaching his licence conditions, South Yorkshire Police said.
He replied to a Facebook appeal from the force saying he's been recalled "for nothing".

Spending a penny at Hull's Victoria Pier toilets scraped in near the bottom of the list at number 483 on the tourism guide published by the Lonely Planet.
Other attractions sporting fewer tiles and less porcelain included the Yorkshire Dales National Park (number 18), Robin Hood's Bay (26) and, in at number 30, York Minster.
Birdwatchers will be pleased that Bempton Cliffs, an internationally important nature reserve at Flamborough Head in East Yorkshire, made it on to the list at number 136.
And Saltaire, a grand social experiment in West Yorkshire, is listed at 224.
Sir Titus Salt, who made his fortune in the textile industry, built Saltaire mill near Bradford and an adjoining village for his workers.
The village has been designated a Unesco World Heritage Site.

A man has been charged with attempting to sexually assault a woman in her own home in Barnsley after climbing up a drainpipe.
The alleged offence is said to have happened at about 02:00 on Monday in Hemingfield, after a man entered the victim's home and cut her face.
The woman managed to fight off the intruder and shouted for neighbours to call the police, South Yorkshire Police said.
A man from Barnsley has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, committing an offence with the intention of committing a relevant sexual offence and burglary with violence in connection with the incident.
