Developers who want to build more than 500 homes next to an ancient bog on the outskirts of York are to appeal against the council's decision to turn the plans down.
Askham Bog, near York, a wetland habitat and Site of Special Scientific Interest, is run by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.
Sir David Attenborough spoke out against plans to build on the land off Moor Lane in January and more than 7,600 people objected to the proposals.
The developers, Barwood Land, disputed there was any risk to the bog.
Sara Robin, from the trust, said: "It's taken 15,000 years to develop because of its particular position at the end where a glacier melted.
"A lake formed and the lake filled in with bits of vegetation over thousands of years."
The appeal will be considered in November.

The number of people dying from drug and alcohol misuse in Doncaster is the highest since records began, new figures show.
According to the Office for National Statistics, 76 people died from drug-related issues between 2016 and 2018, the highest rate since figures were first collected in 2001.
Information obtained from UK Addiction Treatment (UKAT) also shows Doncaster Council has cut drug and alcohol treatment spending by 27%.
The data reveals Doncaster Council spent £7.7m in 2013-14, but this fell to £5.6m in 2018-19.
Council bosses said the figures were "very much reflective of the national picture".
Dr Rupert Suckling, from the council, said: “Like other local authorities across England, we don't have the same amount of budget available for substance misuse services, due to ongoing financial pressures.
“However, we've worked to ensure the quality of the service provided has not been reduced.”
But Eytan Alexander, managing director of UKAT, said it "cannot be a coincidence" reductions in treatment spend across the country correlated with high numbers of deaths.
“We’ve highlighted the drastic reduction in budget cuts to substance misuse services every year since 2013 and, unfortunately, these figures now show the impact this is having," he said.

They're unbeaten so far this season and have already won the League Leader's trophy for the first time in their history.

It is the third year in succession that the Rhinos have reached the Challenge Cup Final, losing the previous two to Halifax.
Captain James Simpson (pictured right), who led the side in both of those matches, says he's hoping to make it third time lucky.
The game gets under way shortly at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

A new venue due to open in York is claiming to be a restaurant, despite staying open until the early hours of the morning and not serving food after 22:30 at night, according to police.
Officers say Playhouse Bar is promoting itself as the city's "number one fun bar".
The North Yorkshire force and City of York Council want to block plans for the bar, on Cumberland Street, to sell alcohol until 02:00 every night of the week.
They say the new bar would have a “negative impact” on the area, which is in a zone in the city centre which already has high levels of crime and anti-social behaviour.
But the owners say they will be running a family-friendly venue and will have bouncers on the door from 22:00 until closing time.
The venue was previously home to Indian street food restaurant The Cat’s Pyjamas (pictured), which closed suddenly in March less than a year after it opened.
A licensing hearing is due to take place later.

Following the initial sighting of the bird earlier this month in Methley, hundreds of twitchers have been aiming their cameras into a field in the area.
The RSPB says the little bustard is a rare sighting, with only 30 or so UK visits by the breed since 1950.
The money has been raised after the landowner, Jenny Nelson, asked people coming to her farm to donate money to a number of local charities.
