    Hull City Council has appealed to people not to put washing up liquid in the city's fountains.

    It comes after the fountains in Queen Victoria Square had to be turned off on Tuesday for 24 hours after detergent was poured into the jets.

    The council said fountains at the Rose Bowl had also been targeted recently.

    Councillor Daren Hale said: "The vast majority of people respect these areas, but unfortunately there are a handful that don’t [and that] results in both inconvenience for residents and also a significant cost for the council."

    Thousands of people are expected to descend on a North Yorkshire stately home today as it plays host to Countryfile Live.

    About 15,000 are predicted to visit Castle Howard over the next four days to see presenters of the BBC show, including John Craven, Ellie Harrison and Matt Baker.

    The arena at Castle Howard, widely recognised from the TV adaption of the Evelyn Waugh novel Brideshead Revisited, has taken three weeks to build.

    A man has been stabbed in an attack outside an Asda supermarket in Dewsbury, say police.

    Officers say the man in his 20s was found just before 05:00 this morning on Mill Street West, with a stab wound to his back and cuts to his face.

    He has been taken to hospital for treatment to what police have described as non-life threatening injuries.

    West Yorkshire Police said a man has been arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with the incident and remains in police custody.

    The force said there will be an increased policing presence in the area today while investigations are carried out.

  4. Scarborough to host world premiere of new BBC comedypublished at 09:25 British Summer Time 15 August 2019

    A new BBC One comedy set in Scarborough is to have its world premiere in the town.

    Written by Benidorm creator Derren Litten, Scarborough is filmed in the North Yorkshire seaside town and follows the lives of a handful of residents bonded by their love of karaoke.

    Comedian Jason Manford and former Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesley lead the cast of the six-part series.

    The first two episodes will be shown for the first time at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough on 5 September.

    There will be matinee and evening screenings, both followed by a Q&A with Mr Litten, chaired by BBC Look North’s Peter Levy.

    Mr Litten said: “I'm so excited that people in Scarborough are going to have the chance to see our new show first. It’s a little thank you from us for letting us film in your beautiful town.”

  7. Security stepped-up after rugby league ball boy 'abused'published at 08:37 British Summer Time 15 August 2019

    A rugby league club has announced plans to tighten security after a ball boy was "left in tears" after he was allegedly verbally abused.

    Keighley Cougars says it will be employing more security stewards for "major matches" and installing CCTV cameras following the incident which happened during their home defeat to Hunslet on Saturday.

    The ball boy is said to have been abused by fans on the terraces.

    As well as the added security measures, a text service is set to be launched for supporters to alert security to on going incidents.

    The club added the steps were being taken to make Keighley Cougars "the most progressive and modern club" in rugby league.

    Boris Johnson must commit £39 billion to Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) as part of a raft of measures to boost the region, leaders have said.

    City mayors Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram are among 19 leaders calling for the Prime Minister to pledge a "northern budget" to unlock its full potential.

    Mr Johnson said a "very, very good case" was being made for the sum to be spent in connections between Liverpool, Manchester, Bradford and Leeds during his Tory leadership campaign.

    The leaders from the Transport for the North group are asking him to commit to the £39 billion funding in full now that he is PM.

    The group, which also includes mayor of the Sheffield City Region Dan Jarvis, are further demanding £7 billion for the Northern Infrastructure Pipeline of road and rail projects.

    A Government spokesman said: "We're already investing over £13 billion in improving transport in the North - more than any government in history - and will set out our plans to build on this in due course."

    A man has appeared in court charged in connection with a serious assault close to Leeds station on Monday morning.

    Christopher Subham, 38, of no fixed address, was charged with grievous bodily harm and appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court earlier.

    He's been remanded in custody until his next appearance at Leeds Crown Court on 11 September.

    A 39-year-old man from Leeds who was also arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm in connection with the incident has been released under investigation.

    The victim of the assault, a 41-year-old man, remains in hospital in a critical condition.

    Any witnesses or anyone with information about the attack is being asked to contact police.

    A giant sculpture in the shape of a fish has been installed at a Yorkshire coastal town to encourage people to take plastic bottles off the beach.

    Fin the Fish has been put up in Scarborough and is a container which can be used to collect plastic bottles which otherwise could have ended up in the sea.

    The 7ft-long fish is a project between the University of Hull and Yorkshire Water.

    A 16-year-old motorcyclist who was killed in a collision with a car has been named by police.

    Conor Emery, from Full Sutton, died when his bike crashed with a car on the A166 between Full Sutton and Wetwang at about 11:00 on Monday.

    Humberside Police have appealed for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

    A Sheffield man who transformed healthcare has been honoured in the city where he was born.

    William Marsden was born in a house near the Dove and Rainbow pub in Hartshead Square in the town centre in 1796.

    He went on to become a well-known surgeon who founded the Royal Free Hospital.

    In 1851, following the death of his wife from cancer, he opened a cancer hospital which is now known as the Royal Marsden in London.

    Tourists visiting a York street famous for its Harry Potter connection have been met with "ear-piercing" sirens after a new fire alarm system was installed.

    A string of false alarms has been reported on the Shambles, which is said to have been an inspiration for Diagon Alley.

    The council has praised the new fire alarm system as a success.

    But some traders say it is frightening visitors and costing them money.

    The picturesque Shambles is known for its similarity to the magical merchant market in the Harry Potter films.

    The council owns 70% of properties on the cobblestoned street and installed the new fire alarm system earlier this year.

  17. Weapons seized as 'guns sold illegally over social media'published at 15:53 British Summer Time 14 August 2019

    Rifles, shotguns and thousands of rounds of ammunition have been seized by police during a raid at a house in Doncaster.

    It came after South Yorkshire Police believed a licensed owner was selling weapons to unlicensed buyers on social media.

    Following the raid at a property in Balby last week, 24 air rifles, four rifles, four shotguns and over 200 knives were found.

    More than 3,000 rounds of ammunition were also seized.

    Volunteers who look after racegoers in Beverley say today is their busiest of the year as thousands of people descend on the town for Ladies Day.

    The Street Angels patrol the town helping people who might have become vulnerable after drinking alcohol.

    Last year, volunteers handed out more than 300 pairs of flip flops and tonight they are doubling the amount of people on patrol.

    Over £20m is to be spent improving a major coastal route in Yorkshire.

    Highways England says over the next year, resurfacing, drainage, junction upgrades and safety improvements, will be carried out on the A64 between the A1(M) at Bramham in West Yorkshire and Seamer in Scarborough.

    A total of 25 schemes are planned along the 55-mile route.

    Highways England project manager Chris Dunn said: "The majority of the work is being carried out from September onwards to avoid the summer months when traffic is at its heaviest."
