About 840 premises are affected in the city centre and about 660 properties in the Strensall area, six miles outside of the city, according to Northern Powergrid.

The company says the power loss has been caused by an "unexpected problem with cables" and says it's working hard to restore power as quickly as possible.

It expects properties in York to have power again at about noon, and those in the Strensall area to be restored by about 16:00.

Up to 80,000 fans are set to gather in Leeds' Roundhay Park for the first of two huge gigs.

Special permission has been granted to increase capacity at the park to allow crowds roughly the same size as Leeds Festival to attend.

The previous limit for live events at the park was close to 20,000 attendees.

Some of rock and pop's biggest names performed at Rounday Park in the 1980s and 1990s, including the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Simple Minds, U2, Michael Jackson and Genesis.

The centre had to close for four days because of safety fears after several caravans took over their playing fields.

  5. 'Short' facial recognition trial used at Meadowhallpublished at 10:35 British Summer Time 16 August 2019

A campaign group says the UK is facing an "epidemic" of facial recognition systems, after it emerged that a South Yorkshire shopping centre was found to have used one.

    Meadowhall

The group Big Brother Watch says it's found the systems at various locations, including Meadowhall.

The technology can scan people's faces in crowds, comparing them with databases of criminals and terrorists.

But Meadowhall's owners say the systems were used in a trial last year and aren't operating now.

Big Brother Watch says millions of people would have been affected and there are "lots of questions still standing" like what company was used to do the surveillance.

A spokesperson for Meadowhall said the "short trial" took place in conjunction with the police and "all data was deleted immediately after the trial".

  7. Countryfile 'can't apologise enough' for traffic delayspublished at 09:43 British Summer Time 16 August 2019

Organisers of Countryfile Live at Castle Howard say they "can't apologise enough" for traffic problems getting to the event in North Yorkshire yesterday.

    Castle Howard

They say a change to the traffic plan appears to be working today and have advised motorists to avoid the A64 where possible.

They introduced the new plan after some motorists complained it was taking them up to five hours to get to the event on Thursday.

Frustrated drivers tweeted about their "horrendous" experiences stuck in long traffic jams on the A64 and the road leading up to the stately home.

Site manager Tim Filmer says: "We had a good number of challenges yesterday and that's an understatement.

"On behalf of everybody at Countryfile, sincere apologies for all the delays that happened. We can't apologise enough."
