    The borough council is looking at an application to keep the wheel, which is on the former Futurist Theatre site in the South Bay, until 10 November.

    The 104ft (32m) landmark can carry a maximum of 144 passengers in 24 enclosed gondolas.

    Flamingo Land is planning to build a new attraction, Flamingo Land Coast, on the theatre site.

    The Futurist itself was demolished last year at a cost of £4m.

    A man has been charged with the murder of Lewis Bagshaw, who was stabbed in the chest in Sheffield earlier this year.

    The 21-year-old died in hospital after being found on Piper Crescent in Southey, Sheffield, on 21 July.

    Callum Ramsey, 18, of Batworth Drive, Sheffield, was charged yesterday on suspicion of murder, police say.

    He is due to appear before Sheffield Magistrates' Court later.

    Jervaise Bennett, 20, of Bishopholme Close, Shirecliffe, and a 16-year-old boy who can't be named for legal reasons have also been charged with the same offence.

    Lincolnshire Police are continuing to investigate the death of a Gainsborough man after a drug dealer from South Yorkshire was convicted of his murder yesterday.

    Kieran Walker (pictured), 23, of Auckley, near Doncaster, was found guilty on Wednesday at Lincoln Crown Court of murdering Jordan O'Brien in a machete attack in March this year.

    The attack happened when the pair fell out over the disappearance of £2,000 worth of amphetamines, the court was told.

    Walker is due to be sentenced in November.

    Officers say they are still trying to identify the driver of a blue BMW car which was found burnt out in the area which police believe could be linked to the incident.

    Anyone with information is being asked to contact police.

    Two people who had become stuck in flood water in York have had to be rescued by fire crews.

    The two people and their dog were trapped in the car at Skeldergate at about 17:00 yesterday.

    They were walked to safety following the incident, according to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

    Faith, who is described as 5ft tall with brown hair, was last seen with another girl in Bridlington on Tuesday.

    The damaged lorries have been moved, according to Highways England.

    There have been reports of delays of up to 70 minutes on the approach to the crash scene.

    There are about eight miles of tailbacks and "severe delays" following a crash between two lorries on the A1M this morning.

    One lane is closed and there is queueing traffic following the crash, which involved two lorries on the northbound carriageway at junction 38 with Red House, Doncaster.

    Congestion is stretching back to the junction with the M18 with a travel time of 70 minutes, according to travel information provider Inrix.

    Students from the the University of Sheffield supporting pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong have clashed with others backing the Chinese government.

    The pro-Hong Kong group said they faced intimidation and had a bottle thrown at them.

    Police confirmed they were called to Fargate in Sheffield city centre amid reports of fighting.

    Students had to be escorted to the Town Hall and took refuge in the debating chamber, according to Councillor Ben Miskell.

    A group of about 30 people had gathered to "raise awareness" of the anti-government protests which have rocked Hong Kong for months.

    According to the group, a counter-protest was arranged by other students over the Chinese messaging app WeChat.

    They are said to have referred to the pro-democracy group as "insects" while singing the Chinese national anthem.

    The funeral for Hull student Libby Squire, whose body was recovered from the Humber estuary weeks after she went missing earlier this year, is to take place later.

    The 21-year-old, who was originally from High Wycombe, disappeared after a night out in Hull on 1 February. After extensive searches she was found close to Spurn Point on 20 March.

    Her funeral, which is expected to be attended by hundreds of mourners, is to be held at St Lawrence's Church, West Wycombe Hill.

    Her mother, Lisa Squire, announced last month that she hoped people would bring photos of Libby and share their memories of the student at the public service.

    A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and released under investigation.

    Humberside Police said its inquiries were ongoing and a file was being prepared for the Crown Prosecution Service.

    More police officers are to patrol a South Yorkshire town once the local police station is brought back into permanent use, it's been confirmed.

    Changes to neighbourhood policing mean a team of officers will now be based at Edlington police station in the new year, according to South Yorkshire Police.

    There'll also be 17 new police posts in Doncaster, with a mixture of police constables and community support officers working in the district.

    It's hoped the Edlington base will allow them to continue their community policing, the force says.

    A pair of almost 200-year-old milestones have been given a makeover to bring them back to their former glory.

    The stones were installed in the 1820s on the B6480 near Settle when the route was the Keighley to Kendal turnpike.

    The above photo shows the stones before and after the restoration.

    Now the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust has helped brighten up the historical landmarks.

    Chris Lodge, from conservation scheme Stories in Stone, said all of the parishes in the Ingleborough area were invited to apply for funding to restore milestones but they didn’t get much interest.

    “I’d be very happy to hear from any parishes that are considering applying. It would be great to see more of these historical features restored”, he said.

    The deadline for new applications is 7 January.
