  1. Fundraising appeal for flood victims passes £50,000 markpublished at 17:46 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2019

    A crowdfunding appeal for people affected by flooding in South Yorkshire has passed its initial target of £50,000.

    The South Yorkshire Community Foundation set up the appeal after heavy rain lead to the flooding of homes.

    A new target of £100,000 has now been set.

    The money will be used to help families who have had their properties damaged by the flood waters and those who have been displaced from their homes.

    An 11-year-old boy's been taken to hospital with a fractured collar bone after being hit by a bicycle as he crossed the road on his way home from school in North Yorkshire, police say.

    Following the collision, the cyclist apologised to the boy before leaving the scene, according to North Yorkshire Police.

    The collision happened at about 15:50 last Wednesday on Mill Street in Norton, near the mini roundabout junction with Beverley Road and Howe Road.

    Police are appealing for the cyclist, or anyone who saw what happened, to contact them.

  3. Doncaster 'still in emergency situation', say councilpublished at 17:37 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2019

    Doncaster remains in an "emergency situation" according to the council, with a number of severe flood warnings still in place.

    "Risk to life" warnings remain along the River Don at Bentley, Fishlake, Kirk Bramwith, South Bramwith and Willow Bridge Caravan Site, with some places being evacuated.

    In its latest statement, Doncaster Council said a "full scale recovery plan" will swing into action once the situation is downgraded by the Environment Agency.

    The warnings are expected to remain for the rest of the day.

    “We continue to operate on Environment Agency guidance and we are still in an emergency situation across parts of Doncaster," said the council's chief executive Damian Allen.

    “A dedicated 24-hour public information helpline was established on Thursday evening to provide advice and support for any concerned residents and to date we have dealt with over 2,500 calls."

  4. Tram train services remain suspended after floodingpublished at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2019

    The tram train service between Sheffield and Rotherham remains suspended this evening because of flooding.

    Floodwater covered parts of the track between Meadowhall and Rotherham Parkgate on Thursday and Friday last week, causing damage to part of the line.

    Supertam say the yellow route won't be able to stop at Meadowhall either.

    North Yorkshire Police say they are keen to trace 29-year-old Jake Mulgrew from the Acomb area of York.

    The force says "extensive inquiries" are being conducted to try and locate him.

    Anyone who sees him, or has information about where he is, is asked to contact police.

    Pumps from the Environment Agency are on their way to help move water from the flooded village of Fishlake, Doncaster.

    The pumps, which had been used at Catcliffe in Rotherham last week, will help shift water away from people's homes.

    A BBC reporter at Fishlake has seen the pumps being driven in.

    Latest photos from the scene shows homes and businesses in deep water, with the fire service helping some people get to safety.

    Two people have died after an HGV and a car collided on the A59 near Knaresborough.

    The collision, involving a grey Mercedes car and a white Scania HGV, happened at about 08:30 this morning between Flaxby and Goldsborough.

    North Yorkshire Police said two people travelling in the Mercedes died at the scene.

    The force has appealed for any witnesses to the crash or anyone who may have dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.

    The A59 is currently closed in both directions between the A658 and Junction 47 of the A1(M).

    Police say it is likely to remain closed until at least 17:00.

  11. Rescue operation launched for swans caught in oil spillagepublished at 15:44 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2019

    The RSPCA is battling to save about 60 swans following an oil spillage caused by flooding in Rotherham.

    The animal welfare charity said the oil may have come from an overturned barge near to the Parkgate shopping centre or from cars abandoned at the height of last week's flooding in the town.

    About 20 of the birds have been rescued already and taken to the RSPCA’s Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre, in Cheshire.

    RSPCA inspectors are now working to save the remaining swans.

    Geoffrey Edmund, the RSPCA’s national wildlife coordinator, said: "The swans are preening to try and clean themselves but while they are doing this they are not feeding and they will become weak so we have to act fast before this happens.

    "They are being taken to our wildlife centre and once they have been thoroughly cleaned they will be able to recuperate and will then be released back into the wild."

    Television writer, Sally Wainwright, will be made a Freewoman of the Borough of Calderdale in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the area, if councillors approve the proposal.

    The nomination is being made by Calderdale Council’s Chief Executive, Robin Tuddenham, who said the writer’s work, Gentleman Jack – based on the life of Anne Lister of Shibden Hall – had promoted the borough to a wider audience.

    The drama was watched by almost six million people each week and is credited with trebling the number of visitors to Shibden Hall (pictured below).

    Wainwright, from Huddersfield, said she was delighted and thrilled to be nominated for the accolade and at the effect Gentleman Jack was having across the world.

    Councillors will consider the nomination on 20 November.

  13. Lorry driver jailed after smashing into stationary trafficpublished at 14:50 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2019

    A lorry driver has been jailed for 18 months after smashing into a queue of stationary traffic.

    Dashcam footage shows David Price driving into traffic on the A17 near Newark on 8 June 2018.

    The driver of a Renault Clio - a University of Leeds student - suffered a fractured arm, back, neck and broken ribs, as well as a bleed on the brain.

    Due to the extent of her injuries, she had to withdraw from university.

    Police said the driver of the Audi pictured in the footage, also "suffered significant injuries".

    Price, 65, of Chapel Lane in Manby, Lincolnshire, was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on 7 November after admitting causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

    Nottinghamshire Police said the footage was released with the agreement of the victims "as a warning to drivers to pay attention when behind the wheel".

    More heavy rain is expected in parts of Yorkshire already suffering from flooding.

    A total of 44 Environment Agency flood warnings are currently in place across the country, including five severe warnings on the River Don in South Yorkshire.

    About 400 homes have been flooded in the north of England and 1,200 properties have been evacuated, said the agency.

    Residents of Fishlake, near Doncaster, said it was the first time the village had flooded in 100 years.

    Some villagers had to spend the night at a nearby pub, where staff said they had seen people crying because of the devastation.

    Doncaster Council - which called for residents to evacuate Fishlake, and set up a rest centre in nearby Stainforth - said a number of roads, external remained closed.

    Some train lines remain blocked by high water.

    Northern said its services into Rotherham Central, external were not running until further notice, with reduced services between Doncaster and Sheffield. CrossCountry's trains are being diverted away from Doncaster, external.

  15. Mobile speed cameras for Humber Bridgepublished at 14:12 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2019

    Mobile speed cameras are to be placed on the Humber Bridge because "two thirds of the drivers do not obey the 50mph speed limit".

    The Humber Bridge Board, which runs bridge, said a survey found there were around 25,000 journeys each day and the "majority" of traffic broke the limit.

    In September one motorist was clocked travelling over the bridge at 132mph.

    The mobile camera vans will begin operating on the bridge from 25 November.

    Councillor Sean Chaytor, chairman of the Humber Bridge Board, said there was a "common misconception" the bridge was a private road and exempt from speed enforcement.

    After a serious horse riding accident left Stephanie Ward unable to work she found an interesting way of making a living.

    Ms Ward, from York, was told not to lift anything heavier than a cup of tea for eight weeks after the incident but, as she said: "Life's heavier than a cup of tea".

    To support herself while healing and in spite of her shyness she became a life model.

    Doncaster Council says it's still in an "emergency situation" as a number of severe flood warnings remain in place.

    Five "risk to life" warnings are in place along the River Don at Bentley, Fishlake, Kirk Bramwith, South Bramwith and Willow Bridge Caravan Site.

    The red, severe flood warnings have led to some places being evacuated.

    These warnings are expected to remain in place for the rest of the day.

    The defender, 28, will miss his country's Euro 2020 qualifiers against Cyprus and Kazakhstan on 16 November and 19 November respectively.

    Cooper had to be substituted during Leeds' 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday after sustaining a "small tear in his groin".

    The club say they're hopeful he'll be fit for their next match away at Luton Town on 23 November.

    Police are appealing for help to find a 16-year-old boy who has gone missing in Hull.

    Theo Murray was last seen at about 18:40 on Sunday in Park Avenue, in the Princes Avenue area of the city.

    He's described as being about 5ft 7ins tall, of stocky build with dark hair.

    Humberside Police say he was last seen wearing a black parka jacket with beige fur around the hood, black tracksuit bottoms and black trainers.

    Anyone who sees the teenager is asked to contact police.

    Police are appealing for information after a "distinctive" supercar was reported stolen in Doncaster.

    The £125,000 orange Audi R8 (pictured above) was stolen from outside a property in Kirk Sandall at about 21:30 on Friday.
