    Two men have been arrested after a masked gang broke into a house in Leeds where it's believed a gun was fired.

    Police responded to an incident at an address in Newton Road, Chapeltown, at 00:35 this morning after reports three masked men had entered the property.

    Officers found damage to an internal door believed to have been caused by a gunshot.

    No-one was injured in the incident.

    West Yorkshire Police two men, aged 20 and 22, have been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and firearms offences in connection with the incident and remain in custody.

    A man has been jailed for 11 months for burgling a house in North Yorkshire after police shared CCTV footage of him on social media committing the crime.

    Michael Karl Lambert, 38, of Portland Farm, Hemingbrough, was found guilty of burgling an address in Cliffe, near Selby, in the early hours of 16 September.

    Relatives of the 79 year-old occupant of the house had installed CCTV cameras throughout his home after it had been burgled four times in the previous 12 months.

    Footage capturing the latest burglary was passed on to North Yorkshire Police, who then shared it on social media in an effort to identify the suspect.

    They were successful in doing so, with Lambert ultimately pleading guilty at York Crown Court yesterday.

    BBC weather presenter Paul Hudson says rain forecast to fall in South Yorkshire over the coming days will not be "anywhere near the same magnitude" as it was last week when more than a months worth of rain fell in 24 hours.

    Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield he said: "I can't see there being further river flooding but what it is going to do is slow down the process of those rivers falling back down to normal levels.

    "Where houses are still flooded it's going to prolong the time it's going to take to dry things out."

    A friend of two teenage boys murdered by their mother and father has described them as "beautiful, confident, and outgoing boys, who both had a bright future ahead of them".

    Blake (above left) and Tristan Barrass (above right), aged 14 and 13, were strangled to death by Sarah Barrass and Brandon Machin at their home in Shriegreen, Sheffield, in May.

    Speaking outside Sheffield Crown Court ,where Barrass and Machin were both jailed for a minimum of 35 years, family friend Matthew Saunders said "daily life will never be the same".

    "A piece of all our hearts died on 24 May 2019, which we will never get back," he said.

    "Blake and Tristan leave a huge empty void in our lives, and we did not get chance to say goodbye.

    "We are relieved justice has been served, but it should never have come to this."

    Former Prime Minister Tony Blair has paid tribute to veteran Labour politician Frank Dobson, who has died at the age of 79.

    Mr Dobson (pictured above with Tony Blair), who was born and lived in York, served as health secretary in Mr Blair's government following Labour's 1997 landslide victory.

    On hearing the news of Mr Dobson's death, Tony Blair described him as an exemplary public servant and politician of the highest calibre.

    Mr Blair said: "Frank made an immense contribution to getting Labour back into power in the 1990s and made many important improvements to the NHS, an institution he cared about deeply.

    "He was a great colleague with an often pugnacious style but always loyal to the Labour Party and to changing the lives of people for the better."

    Swans affected by an oil spill caused by the severe floods in South Yorkshire are being cleaned and cared for at a wildlife centre in Nantwich, Cheshire.

    The RSPCA facility at Stapeley Grange said it had so far helped 38 swans affected by the spill in the Sheffield and South Yorkshire canal, with a further 25 animals expected.

    The oil came from an upturned barge in Rotherham and leaked from cars trapped in flood water.

    An emergency fundraising appeal has begun to help with the rescue and rehabilitation.

    Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla has been granted an extension to provide a response to a Football Association charge of racial abuse.

    The Spaniard, 33, has already denied a charge of racially abusing Charlton Athletic forward Jonathan Leko.

    But he was given until today to provide the governing body with a formal response - that's now been extended until 27 November.

    The FA began an investigation into the incident, which occurred during Charlton's 1-0 home win, last month.

    Casilla has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 and it's alleged his words "made reference to race and/or colour and/or ethnic origin".

    Leeds issued a statement when Casilla was charged, external on 4 November, saying the former Real Madrid goalkeeper "strenuously denies the allegation".

    An emergency vehicle used by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service has been taken off the road after parts of it were damaged and stolen overnight.

    The service says: "We're shocked and appalled someone would damage one of our emergency vehicles and take a valuable resource off the road."

    Police say doors and other parts were removed from the Land Rover at some point last night at Beverley Ambulance Station on Driffield Road.

    The Humberside force says anyone who knows anything about the incident should get in touch.

    A mother who murdered two of her sons and plotted to kill four more out of fear they would be taken into care has been jailed for at least 35 years.

    Sarah Barrass strangled Tristan and Blake Barrass, aged 13 and 14, in Shiregreen, Sheffield, on 24 May with the help of her half-brother Brandon Machin, who it can now be revealed was the boys' father.

    Barrass, 35, and Machin, 39, had plotted to kill all six of their children before strangling the two eldest and putting bin bags over their heads.

    Sheffield Crown Court heard that prior to the killings, they had given four of her children - including Tristan and Blake - tablets against their will. The pair also tried to kill one of the other children by attempting to drown them in a bath.

    A judge ruled that Barrass and Machin should both be jailed for life with a minimum term of 35 years.

    The warnings remain along the River Don, with people continuing to be helped to safety from their flooded homes in places like Fishlake.

    Areas such as Fishlake and Bentley, near Doncaster, which have been affected by flooding remain in "an emergency situation", according to the council.

    The council says its staff are "doing all we can to provide support and reassurance where it is safe to do so".

  17. Politicians pay tribute to York-born Frank Dobsonpublished at 13:57 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2019

    Tributes have been paid to the York-born former Labour health secretary Frank Dobson, who has died aged 79.

    Mr Dobson was part of Tony Blair's cabinet for two years after Labour's general election win in 1997.

    He was MP for Holborn and St Pancras in London from 1979 until his retirement in 2015.

    In a statement, Mr Dobson's family said he died on Monday after a long period of illness.

    David Lammy, who's standing as Labour's candidate for Tottenham in the general election, has described Mr Dobson as an "icon":

    Meanwhile, the current Conservative Health Secretary Matt Hancock also paid tribute to Mr Dobson.

    A draft copy of a review into the HS2 high-speed railway linking London and the North of England says it should be built, despite its rising cost.

    The government-commissioned review, launched in August, will not be published until after the election.

    It says the project might cost even more than its current price of £88bn.

    Members of the panel which produced the review have told the BBC that the draft recommends that HS2 should be built with only relatively minor alterations.

    These include reducing the number of trains per hour from 18 to 14, which is in line with other high-speed networks around the world.

    Humberside Police is asking for people to submit footage of alleged driving offences online in an effort to improve road safety.

    The force's new online portal will allow people to upload footage of inappropriate or dangerous behaviour for officers to review to see if any action needs to be taken.

    The force says members of the public can help to help keep roads safe and the move won't replace traditional patrols.

    A power cut has left more than 100 properties in Barnsley without power.

    Several businesses have reportedly been affected, with customers forced to wait outside.

    The loss of power to 130 properties was caused by an unexpected problem with an electricity cable in the local area, according to Northern Powergrid.

    The company said it hoped to have power restored by 13:30.
