    An e-fit image has been released of one of two men who duped an elderly Doncaster couple out of more than £10,000.

    The victims had asked the men to carry out some repairs to their roof when the men began demanding regular payments of £250 for petrol and materials

    On 4 September, one of the men came to the couple's home asking for more money and ended up taking them to a bank to withdraw £1,500.

    The two men went on to force the couple to buy jewellery worth £8,200 from a shop in Woodlands.

    The suspect is said to have told the victims he would send them a cheque for the money.

    The younger suspect, pictured in the e-fit, is described as being about 27 years old and the couple say he spoke with an Irish accent.

    The older man is described as being about 69 years old, white, about 6ft tall, of chubby build, with grey hair and a grey beard.

    Both men were described as being smart and well-dressed. The older man drove a white van and the younger man drove a black 4x4 type vehicle.

    Anyone who recognises the man pictured above, or has any other information, is being asked to contact police.

    Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson has said the government should declare a national emergency in response to the flooding in South Yorkshire.

    Meeting volunteers at a community centre in Stainforth near Fishlake, she said it shouldn't be down to local people to lead the response to recent events.

    She told BBC News: "It is wrong that it seems to be just down to the local communities, important though this work is, this is clearly a national emergency and the government should be declaring it as such."

    Prime Minister Boris Johnson is to due chair an emergency Cobra meeting later to discuss the response to recent flooding.

  3. Former Labour MP Frank Dobson dies aged 79published at 12:15 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2019

    Former Labour health secretary Frank Dobson, who was born and grew up in York, has died aged 79.

    Mr Dobson was MP for Holborn and St Pancras in London for 36 years having first been elected in 1979 before standing down in 2015.

    He served in Tony Blair's cabinet as health secretary between 1997 and 1999.

    Mr Dobson also ran as the Labour candidate in the inaugural Mayor of London elections in 2000 but ultimately lost out to independent Ken Livingstone.

    A family statement said: "The Dobson family is sad to announce the death of Frank Dobson, former MP for Holborn and St Pancras and Secretary of State for Health.

    "His family would like to thank all the staff at the Homerton University Hospital for their outstanding expertise, commitment and care in the last few months and also the staff of York Hospital for his previous excellent care.

    "He also greatly appreciated the support of his many friends and former parliamentary colleagues."

    More than £80,000 has so far been raised to help the victims of flooding in South Yorkshire.

    An emergency relief appeal was launched when the River Don overtopped last week, with heavy rain adding to the floodwater.

    South Yorkshire's Community Foundation, in conjunction with BBC Radio Sheffield, has raised the money to help families and local people who have been displaced from their homes and had their properties damaged by the flood waters.

    A total of £82,000 has so far been raised.

    A mother killed two of her children by strangling them and putting bin bags over their heads.

    Sarah Barrass, 35, killed Tristan and Blake Barrass, aged 13 and 14, in Shiregreen, Sheffield, on 24 May, along with family member Brandon Machin, 39.

    Sheffield Crown Court heard the couple had tried to kill the two boys and two younger children by giving them an overdose of tablets but when that failed they strangled the two eldest children.

    The court heard Barrass killed the children because she feared they would be taken into care.

    Barrass and Machin are being sentenced after pleading guilty to murdering Tristan and Blake, as well as conspiracy to murder six of Barrass' children, including Tristan and Blake, and five counts of attempted murder.

    The hearing continues.

    This happy, leaping pooch is called Dutch.

    He's a Dutch shepherd dog (hence the name) and has just retired having become the longest serving general purpose dog North Yorkshire Police has ever had.

    Dutch was with the force for nine years, but as you can see he's lost none of his energy or enthusiasm, especially for his handler Marc Richardson.

  8. Castleford's Trueman named in GB Rugby League Lions squadpublished at 10:47 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2019

    Castleford Tigers half-back Jake Trueman could make his Great Britain Rugby League Lions debut after being named in an initial 21-man squad for Saturday's final tour test against Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby.

    The Lions have lost all three of their matches so far, once to Tonga and twice to New Zealand.

    Huddersfield Giants wing Jermaine McGillvary and Hull FC's Jake Connor are the other Yorkshire-based players included in head coach Wayne Bennet's squad.

    They'll train for the first time in Papua New Guinea tomorrow before a final team run on Friday, after which the squad will then be reduced to 19.

    It's the first time the Great Britain team has visited Papua New Guinea, where rugby league is the national sport, since 1996.

    Detectives have appealed again for information following the death of a man in Rotherham at the weekend.

    Emergency crews were called shortly after 21:30 on Sunday to a property in Denman Street to reports a man was seriously injured. The 26-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Two people, a 32-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, were arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.

    Supt Steve Chapman said: "I would like to offer reassurance to the community, and urge anyone with information that could help our inquiries to come forward.

    "Neighbourhood teams are increasing patrols in the area and carrying out door-to-door inquiries."

    The rail line between Sheffield and Stockport has reopened following flooding.

    The line at Edale flooded following heavy rain, suspending services.

    A main railway line between Sheffield and Manchester has been closed because of heavy rain flooding the route.

  13. Appeal after two killed in lorry crash near Knaresborough.published at 09:13 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2019

    Police are appealing for witnesses after two people were killed when a lorry and a car collided on the A59 in North Yorkshire.

    The collision, involving a grey Mercedes car and a white Scania HGV, happened at about 08:30 yesterday near Knaresborough, between Flaxby and Goldsborough.

    The Mercedes car was travelling from the A1(M) towards Harrogate at the time of the collision.

    The road was closed for more than nine hours following the incident.

    North Yorkshire Police say witnesses to the crash, or anyone with dashcam footage of the incident, should get in touch.

    A man has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder after two men were shot in West Yorkshire.

    The men, aged 22 and 27, were seriously injured in the shooting on Huddersfield Road in Liversedge on 4 November.

    West Yorkshire Police said 32-year-old Umar Ditta, from Wakefield, was due to appear at Leeds Magistrates' Court.

    A man, 30, arrested on Saturday remains in custody while two others, aged 24 and 25, have been released while inquiries continue.

    A man whose neck broke as he was treated by a chiropractor shouted "You are hurting me," his widow told an inquest.

    John Lawler, 80, was attending Chiropractic 1st in York in August 2017 when he said he could not feel his arms and became like a "ragdoll".

    Mr Lawler was taken to York Hospital and later transferred to Leeds General Infirmary where he died the next day.

    A police investigation into his death ruled out any criminal charges.

    The inquest continues.

    Flooding in South Yorkshire is causing disruption to some train and tram services.

    There's no service on Northern at Rotherham Central or the Tram-Train Route on Sheffield Supertram.

  18. PM convenes emergency committee over Yorkshire floodingpublished at 07:25 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2019

    The prime minister is to chair a meeting of the government's emergency committee Cobra later in response to floods in South Yorkshire and the east Midlands.

    The Environment Agency currently has five severe warnings in place on the River Don in South Yorkshire, external, meaning a "significant risk to life".

    There are also 17 flood warnings and nine flood alerts.

    About 400 homes have been flooded and 1,200 properties evacuated.

    Prior to the government's announcement, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn had called on Boris Johnson to convene Cobra.

    A government spokesman said: "The prime minister will chair an emergency meeting today to discuss the response to recent flooding."

    A yellow "be aware" warning for rain remains in place over parts of Yorkshire for today and Thursday.

    An emergency appeal to support "displaced" families affected by the floods has raised almost £50,000.

    Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has called on Boris Johnson to call an emergency meeting following flooding across Yorkshire and the East Midlands.

    In a letter to the the Prime Minister Mr Corbyn urged him to call a meeting of the government's emergency committee, Cobra, and take "personal charge" of the response.

    He called for "full assurance" that "every resource is being utilised to aid those that need it and protect against future potential floods".

    He went on to suggest that if the flooding had happened "in Surrey, not Yorkshire or the East Midlands, it seems far more likely that a national emergency would have been declared".

    The BBC has contacted the government for a response.
