  4. Plans show possible extension for Nottingham's tram networkpublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 29 August 2019

    Kit Sandeman
    Local Democracy Reporter

Plans for how the tram network in Nottingham could be extended to Giltbrook Retail Park have been revealed.

Four routes are being considered, all of which go from the Phoenix Park tram stop where they currently terminate, and include plans for a new park and ride on Gin Close Way.

The proposals, which are in its early stages, have come to light after a Freedom of Information request to Broxtowe Borough Council, and could cost between £135m and £168m.

Funding has still not been secured but it is hoped the construction work would be cheaper than other extensions, because some of the tracks would use former railway lines.

Next Thursday, councillors at Broxtowe Borough Council are expected to commission a further study to look at the potential economic benefits of the scheme to bolster their case to the government.

Leader of Nottingham City Council, Labour’s David Mellen, said they welcomed other areas of the city looking at ways to extend the tram network.

“There's no doubt that expanding our already well-connected tram network would help to further reduce congestion around the city, and we are continuing to look at options for future extensions across the whole of Nottingham," he said.

"This includes Kimberley, as well as options to extend to HS2, Fairham Pastures and Gedling, but it would clearly need significant support and financial input from the government to make this happen."

  8. Graffiti sprayed on Conservative Club in Arnoldpublished at 10:08 British Summer Time 29 August 2019

    Alex Regan
    BBC News

Graffiti has been sprayed on the Balfour Conservative Club in Arnold overnight.

The slogans sprayed were "stop the coup" and "undemocratic", presumably in response to prime minister Boris Johnson's decision to suspend Parliament.

Mr Johnson's move has sparked protests across the country, a legal challenge and a petition with more than a million signatures.

Chairwoman Pam Gallagher said the graffiti was in the process of being removed, and it had been reported to police.

She added: "Whilst we are disappointed to find this graffiti, it's hardly surprising that people wish to air their views.

"To them our white walls must have looked very inviting, I'm sure it's understood that this is not a statement from the club - either the committee or its members."

Stewardess of the club, Maxine Bowes, said: "I've been here 23 years and nothing like this has ever happened before."

Leader of the House Jacob Rees-Mogg told BBC Breakfast Parliament would normally head into a recess for the party conferences in September anyway - adding there would still be time to debate Brexit in the Commons before Britain's scheduled departure date from the European Union on 31 October.

A woman says she burst into tears when a purse containing her dad's ashes was returned to her after she lost it at a film screening in Melton Mowbray.

Mrs Frisby, who kept the ashes in a bag in the purse, said: "They were the only thing I was worried about - I wasn't worried about the cards or photos.

"My dad died when I was very young but I like to carry part of him with me."

The purse was found near the swimming baths by a passing student, who handed it into the police, and returned to Mrs Frisby within an hour of it being reported missing.

Mrs Frisby said: "It was the longest hour of my life.

"I burst into tears and hugged the officer who brought it back to me.

"I'm looking to make the ashes into jewellery now, as a ring is less likely to go wandering off than my purse is."

  14. Shopping centre blamed for decline in high street footfallpublished at 17:36 British Summer Time 28 August 2019

    East Midlands Today

One of Nottingham's top shopping streets has lost an average of about 7,000 potential customers per month, with seven units currently standing empty.

The figures, released by Nottingham City Council, show the average monthly footfall on Bridlesmith Gate was more than 300,000 in the last 12 months - a 3% drop from the previous year.

The authority said numbers had fallen since work started on the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre, blocking a through route to the street.

    Bridlesmith Gate

Bridlesmith Gate once had a reputation as one of the city's most upmarket shopping areas, housing several designer stores.

"The vacancy rates are quite low across the city centre but we do have pockets and Bridlesmith Gate is certainly one of those that's struggling at this moment in time," said councillor Sam Webster.

The council said it is investing £250m on the south side of the city by 2021 and is predicting better footfall once the Broadmarsh work is complete.

  15. Graffiti 'will brighten up' city subwayspublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 28 August 2019

    East Midlands Today

Leicester is hoping its dark city centre subways will become more colourful over the next few months as the council turns them into galleries for local street artists.

The city council said it has spent thousands of pounds over several years removing offensive and illegal graffiti but it now hopes the artists' creations will help the tunnels look much brighter and more welcoming.

"It was a place that didn't have a lot going on. It was all neglected," said Izzy Hoskins, from Graffwork Projects, who organised the project with the council.

She hopes the scheme will help improve the area and broaden people's views of art.

    Alex Regan
    BBC News

Brexit-supporting Tory MP Ben Bradley has come out in support of the government's plan to suspend Parliament, reducing the chance for politicians to prevent a no-deal Brexit.

In a social media post, the representative for Mansfield said prime minister Boris Johnson is "a leader with the courage to deliver".

He added proroguing Parliament was "perfectly normal" for a new government, but said there was the "added bonus of reducing the time available for MPs to try and block Brexit".

More than 70% of voters in Mansfield said they wanted to leave the European Union in the 2016 referendum.
