  1. Council preparing for impact of no-deal Brexitpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 27 August 2019

    Kit Sandeman
    Local Democracy Reporter

Contingency plans for a no-deal Brexit have been drawn up by Gedling Borough Council.

The possible problems it's preparing for range from panic-buying of fuel and economic destabilisation to procurement at local leisure centres and staff recruitment.

The document, EU Exit and No Deal Action Plan, was released after a Freedom of Information request by the People’s Vote campaign.

    Gedling Borugh Council

Deputy leader of the council, Councillor Michael Payne, said all councils have an obligation to plan for all sorts of events from floods to terrorist attacks and the Brexit plan forms part of its "risk register".

"The purpose of the risk register is to honestly assess scenarios, including worst case ones, so we can decide how likely they are to happen," he said.

"The register is not an indication that we expect these scenarios to happen... it helps ensure we are as prepared as we can be for any eventuality including a deal or no-deal Brexit."

  3. Residents claim proposed housing site is 'contaminated'published at 16:54 British Summer Time 27 August 2019

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

Residents opposed to a 165-home development in the Leicestershire village of Glen Parva claim the proposed site is contaminated because it's a former landfill.

Angry residents expressed their concerns on the safety of the plans at a parish council meeting this week, the Local Democracy Reporting Service reports.

Glen Parva parish council chairwoman Jan Martin said: "Everything about this application is wrong."

Reading out an objection from a resident, she said: “I know that hazardous substances went into it, there [are] Second World War aircraft in there and probably mercury from the cock pit.

“There’s records out there that prove landfill sites still cause problems years later.”

Other concerns raised included there only being one entrance and exit for the development and issues around the construction traffic and noise.

James Warrington, from developers Galliford Try, said they would work with residents to minimise disruption.

He said they had carried out "extensive ground investigation" to ensure the site was suitable for housing.

"We have successfully remediated similar sites for residential development," he added.

Outline planning permission for the site, off Cork Lane in Glen Parva, has already been granted, but a list of conditions need to be met by the developers before the green light is given by Blaby District Council’s planning committee later this year.

    East Midlands Today

A Nottinghamshire security officer has found a way of turning old windscreens into works of art.

Brian Smallwood, from Ravenshead, turns scrap windscreens and glass into colourful creations, and has seen one sold for thousands at Christie's in London.

He often scours scrapyards for his materials, using acrylic or glass sourced from aeroplanes, trains and cars, and has even had an aircraft window exhibition at East Midlands Airport to showcase his work.

Explaining how he came up with the idea, the 59-year-old said: "It was about seven years ago I was in a car park, sat in my car, looking out.

"It was a beautiful day and I saw all these beautiful reflections on the windscreens and I thought maybe I could paint on these windscreens and put them on a wall."

    David Pittam
    BBC News Online

A fire which scorched a field the size of six hectares was started deliberately, firefighters believe.

They were called to put out the flames on a field in Colston Gate, near Cotrgave, at about 14:00 yesterday.

Farmer Stephen Hoyland lent a hand stopping them spread as the fire was heading towards homes.

He said the hay bales in the field had clearly individually been set on fire and that this is common towards the end of the school holidays.

He added: "It has done a lot of damage to the hedges - it's sad to see the little birds all burned in their nests.

  13. Nicky Morgan criticised for swerving Brexit questionspublished at 13:28 British Summer Time 27 August 2019

    Alex Regan
    BBC News

Culture Secretary Nicky Morgan has been accused of self-interest after refusing to say whether she would resign her Cabinet post if Boris Johnson tried to shut down Parliament.

The Loughborough MP swerved questions on proroguing Parliament to guarantee a no-deal Brexit, something Boris Johnson has refused to rule out.

On June's Question Time, the-then backbench MP said the idea of proroguing Parliament was "a mad suggestion", but on BBC Breakfast she said: "To be honest with you, I haven’t even thought about it, because it hasn’t even come up on the radar."

She said the prime minister was "not attracted to these sort of archaic conventions", and claims of prorogation in September are "utterly false".

Asked on the Today programme whether she would resign if Mr Johnson prorogued Parliament she said: "Having just taken on what is a fantastic role... I'm not planning the ending of my Cabinet career at this moment in time.

"I - like the rest of the Cabinet - am working very hard, both to support the government in its efforts to find a deal, but also to prepare for a no deal if that is what ultimately has to happen."

Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry accused Ms Morgan and other ministers of putting their jobs over the best interests of their constituents.
