  7. Could this be the end of Louth cattle market?published at 16:52 British Summer Time 5 July 2017

    Lucy Parry
    BBC Radio Lincolnshire

Since the 16th century Louth has had a cattle market, but today it's been announced that could change.

    Options

East Lindsey District Council has discussed proposals for the site, before a report goes to the executive board next Wednesday.

One of the options being put forward for the site means it would be sold off.

In the past that's been balanced with plans for a new one on the industrial estate.

Now the council says that might not be the best way to spend the £5m which would come from the sale.

Craig Leyland the leader of East Lindsey DC says they have to spend money wisely. A decision was made a couple of years ago to sell to a supermarket but that didn't proceed:

    Quote Message

There is a great historical attachment to this cattle market... Equally there is a view in Louth that this site would be better served by having another use and that would be retail outlet."

Craig Leyland, Leader of East Lindsey District Council

A consultation will start now with a decision being made by the full council in October.

The market could end temporarily end in December, but an Act of Parliament would be required to close it permanently.
