  3. Rise in burglary numbers expected - but not for the reason you might thinkpublished at 09:42 British Summer Time 5 July 2017

    Harry Parkhill
    BBC Local Live, Lincolnshire

People in Lincolnshire are being warned to expect a significant rise in burglary numbers. The increase is due to a change in the way that statistics are compiled - rather than an increase in actual crime.

    BurglaryImage source, Thinkstock

Currently burglary statistics are separated into two categories - dwelling, those that take place in people's homes - and non-dwelling for areas such as gardens or sheds.

The Home office has now decided to change that - there will be no distinction between home and garden. Instead statistics will be separated into two new categories - residential burglaries and business and community burglaries.

Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commisioneer Marc Jones says the new rules will give a clearer more simplified view of crime figures - and allow police to better target their resources.

But he warns that in some areas it will appear that burglary numbers have increased.
