  1. Modern-day slavery fears over Lincoln's homelesspublished at 14:58 British Summer Time 17 August 2017

A Lincoln charity is warning that vulnerable people sleeping on the streets are at risk of becoming victims of modern-day slavery.

The warning comes after 11 people were convicted of modern slavery and fraud last week following a major operation by Lincolnshire Police.

The Nomad Trust, which runs a night shelter, says homeless people in the city have nowhere safe to go during the day and can be targeted by criminals offering them work - then exploit them.

    Quote Message

If you've got 12 hours on the streets all day doing nothing and somebody says, 'Come with me. I'll give you some work, I'll give you some food, I'll give you some money and somewhere to sleep' - people jump at that chance because they don't see it as something to draw them in, they see it as an opportunity - which most of the time it isn't."

  4. Vigil marks first anniversary of Grantham A&E overnight closurepublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 17 August 2017

    Katie O'Halloran
    BBC Radio Lincolnshire

Campaigners have marked a year since the closure of Grantham's overnight A&E service with a vigil.

    Vigil

The service was suspended because of a shortage of doctors and the decision has been backed by the government.

The United Lincolnshire Hospital's Trust says it's still committed to bringing it back, but only when there are enough staff to run it safely.

Campaigners have held a vigil every Wednesday since the closure of the overnight service.

Speaking at the start of last night's event, campaigner Elvis Stooke said they were determined to keep the pressure on until it re-opens:

    Quote Message

I have faith that these vigils, these campaigns, will eventually get what we want. As I've always said from the beginning we can't surrender. A community like this needs a hospital like this and it certainly needs its A&E."

The BBMF, based at RAF Coningsby, says it doesn't know when the issue with the Merlin engines will be resolved.

It affects the majority of the Memorial Flight's aircraft, including the Lancaster Bomber, Spitfires and Hurricanes.

The team's already had to cancel some of its airshow appearances.

The aircraft are also due to fly at the Scampton Airshow in Lincolnshire next month.

The RAF said it realised people would be disappointed, but added safety was of paramount concern.

The 52-year-old, who used to be a North Kesteven district councillor, then changed his plea.

He pleaded guilty to 23 of the charges.

Police raided his home in December 2013 and found a stash of more than 700 disks containing pornography, 45 of them involving children.

As well as being jailed for two years, he's been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years and given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for when he's released from prison.

Campaigners in Louth have questioned the temporary closure of some wards at the town's hospital.

Patients were moved from the wards in June after a review raised fire safety concerns, and it was announced yesterday that the wards are not now due to re-open until at least September.

Health bosses say remedial work is being carried out and the delay to their re-opening isn't a back door way of closing beds.

But Julie Speed, from the Fighting for Louth Hospital Group, asks why it's taking so long:

    Quote Message

We were told six to eight weeks when they were very first evacuated, and now we're being told six to eight weeks again. Is it always going to be six to eight weeks? When are we actually going to see them open?"

    Alex Rhodes
    BBC Local Live, Lincolnshire

The first students to sit the new A-level exams in England will get their results this morning.

Students now sit all their exams at the end of two years of study, instead of taking modules throughout the course.

Pupils living in poorer parts of Lincolnshire are far less likely to go to university than those in wealthy areas.

According to a government report published last year a third of 18-year-olds in Lincolnshire have gone on to some form of higher education.

Between 11-15% of teenagers in some of the most deprived council wards went into higher education over a five-year period.

That compares with a rate of between 55 and 65% in some other areas which have much lower levels of child poverty.

Some areas are bucking this trend. The Carholme area of Lincoln is one of the most deprived areas, according to official rankings, and yet it sees 44% of its students go onto higher education.

Sue Binch was town mayor at the time of the fire...

    Quote Message

It was the biggest disaster Skegness had ever seen, the seafront was no more, it was just a tangle pile of metal smoldering wreckage. Some people were nearly in tears because of lots of old memories and it had just gone.

The BBMF had said that all aircraft were unable to fly but has since clarified that it's the Lancaster bomber, Spitfires and Hurricanes powered by the Merlin engine which are affected.

A spokeswoman told BBC Radio Lincolnshire the fault was found as part of a routine service on one of the Hurricane aircraft.

She said engineers had taken the action as a precautionary measure to safeguard BBMF crews and the historic aircraft they fly.
