A judge at Nottingham Crown Court is currently passing sentence on 11 members of the same family who have been convicted of modern slavery offences in Lincolnshire.

The 10 men and one woman ran a driveway resurfacing company which used workers housed in caravans without running water or toilet facilities.

The judge is describing how food was used as a "means of control" by members of the Rooney family who centred their operation near Lincoln.

Making clear how members of the family convicted treated their victims, he says: "It was like the gulf between medieval royalty and peasantry."

We're hearing from Nottingham Crown Court, where the judge has begun sentencing 11 members of a family convicted of modern slavery offences.

The 10 men and one woman ran a driveway resurfacing company which used workers housed in caravans without running water or toilet facilities.

Their victims worked long hours to fund what police said was a "lavish lifestyle". One had worked for the family for 26 years.

It has been described as the biggest slavery case in British legal history, and the court's been told this morning it was centred on a site in Drinsey Nook, near Lincoln.

My colleague Linsey Smith is in court and has been tweeting early sentencing remarks from the judge who says those convicted were "chilling in their mercilessness":

They picked up men on the streets of Hull and Lincoln and forced them to work for little or no pay, while living in squalid conditions.

One man was held for 26 years and his family had given him up for dead.
