The NFU says the closure could have a knock on effect for farmers who relied on the company to transport the beet.

The union is calling on British Sugar to "invest in its four factories and supply chain to ensure they operate effectively".

British Sugar says contingency plans are in place for potential problems like this.

  2. Lunch club to combat lonelinesspublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 17 October 2017

    Harry Parkhill
    BBC Local Live, Lincolnshire

Earlier I mentioned that a new lunch club has been set up to tackle loneliness in Skegness.

Age UK says that the town suffers from "high isolation and loneliness".

    lunch club

People who have been at the first lunch club today have told us what it means to them.

One lady said: "As you get older your family and your friends have other things to do, you get left alone quite a lot."

Glynnis told us that she's become lonely since her husband died earlier in the year.

    Quote Message

I think the club is very important to anybody here. If you've been with someone for 49 years as I had with my husband, you need to get somewhere to meet some people. I've never bothered before because I didn't have to because I had my husband there. Now I'm having to bother, being single again after all these years. I find it quite hard.

The school also says that it has made excellent progress against internal targets, and changes the school are making are leading to "rapid and sustainable improvements".

    Quote Message

The actions we are taking are leading to rapid and sustainable improvements in our school having recently celebrated nearly 100% of pupils achieving 9-4 grades in GCSE English and maths and impressive A-Level results which have led to even more of our students studying at top universities.

  5. Planned parliamentary boundaries to affect Lincolnshirepublished at 13:24 British Summer Time 17 October 2017

    Sharon Edwards
    Political Reporter, BBC Radio Lincolnshire

Revised changes to parliamentary boundaries could affect who you vote for in the next general election if they're approved.

The government wants to cut the number of MPs in the House of Commons.

Currently the constituency boundaries look like this:

old boundariesImage source, Boundary Commission for England

New borders could mean that people living in Heckington will vote for the Boston and Skegness MP, not the Sleaford and North Hykeham MP.

It would also mean people in Waddington would no longer vote for Lincoln's MP whilst people in parts of South Hykeham now would.

The proposed changes are pictured below in light blue:

new boundariesImage source, Boundary Commission for England

The changes would have to be approved by parliament which some commentators say is unlikely.

The Labour Party says the proposed changes are for the government to pursue "their own political advantage rather than what is in the best interest of the country".

  7. Ofsted: Grammar School 'requires improvement'published at 12:34 British Summer Time 17 October 2017

    Harry Parkhill
    BBC Local Live, Lincolnshire

Skegness Grammar School has been downgraded in its latest Ofsted report, from "Good" to "Requires Improvement".

The report criticised the school for not maintaining the "high standards inspectors found at the last inspection".

It focused on the quality of teaching, saying it "is not good enough across the school to ensure that all pupils make consistently strong progress."

But the report does praise the interim headteacher for what it calls a precise understanding of the school's strengths and for taking rapid action to resolve weaker aspects of the school.

It also singles out successes helping disadvantaged students.

  8. Lincolnshire house prices 'out pacing London'published at 12:06 British Summer Time 17 October 2017

    Harry Parkhill
    BBC Local Live, Lincolnshire

Earlier we learned that house prices in Gainsborough are among some of the lowest in the country according to new data.

But a Lincolnshire Estate agent says the data also shows that housing prices in the county rose faster than in London in the last ten years.

Tim Downing, a partner at Pygott and Crone, says they are looking to open an office in the town.

But he does point out that while prices have risen, they still are far below the national average.

    Quote Message

It's still a very affordable county, it's great for first time buyers. Our average house price is only £145k compared with the national average of £260k. So although prices have increased dramatically, it's still very affordable.
