  5. Reindeer owners respond to city animal rights protest planpublished at 12:21 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2017

The owners of several reindeer which are expected to take part in a parade through Lincoln tonight have defended their use of the animals in such events.

    Reindeer

It comes after animal rights charity Animal Aid said it plans to protest in Lincoln city centre later to coincide with the parade.

The charity says using reindeer is the same as using animals in circuses - something the "majority of the British public" is opposed to, it says.

But Tilly Smith, Chief herder of the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd, says the animals are cared for and are "like ponies" which are used in public events all the time.

    Quote Message

Obviously we care for our reindeer and we do this at this time of year because it helps to support the herd - which then lives the rest of the year free-ranging in the Cairngorms."

Earlier this week, it was revealed that about 10,000 cases nationwide had been affected by an investigation into Manchester-based Randox Testing Services.

Police probed the company after two men were arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice in February.

In a statement, Lincolnshire Police say cases from across the county have been affected, but won't say what kind of cases they are, or whether active criminal proceedings have been affected.

    Quote Message

We recognise the impact of this inquiry and appreciate the distress it may cause to people affected. I would like to take this opportunity to reassure those people that appropriate action has been taken and any effect it may have will be communicated at the first available opportunity."
