As national figures reveal that deaths from prostate cancer have overtaken those from breast cancer for the first time, one Lincolnshire sufferer is urging men to go for a regular checkups.

Mike, 81, from Horncastle, says that after his diagnosis he refused radiation treatment because of the "horrendous side effects" he had with a previous treatment.

He says that he's taking a course of pills and injections but that "it's in the lap of the gods...I'm just going to go with the flow."

He urges other men to be checked as soon as possible to avoid a deadly late diagnosis and the sort of problems he's now facing:

    Quote Message

It gives you a bit of a kick which you think, oh my god, here we go again, because the previous treatments I'd had were pretty horrendous. The thing is, it's most important that you get the PSA [prostate-specific antigen] test done in the first instance because that gives you an indication that there could be a problem."

Roller Derby is a boisterous game which involves roller skaters trying to 'lap' each other while hurtling round a track.

It usually involves pushing, shoving and distraction tactics for one side to beat the other.

Eve Gormley, from Sleaford, and Rachel Bell, from Lincoln, are taking part in the junior version of the Roller Derby World Cup which is happening in Manchester this weekend.

    Quote Message

I played in a mixed tournament in the summer in Copenhagen and everything kind of blew up from there really, like there are games all over the place really now, like big games, and we've just been put together. We had to send footage of us skating and our skills to apply for Team England."

Residents at a seaside resort in Lincolnshire are planning a protest today over a housing development which has been unfinished for nearly ten years.

    Unfinished development

A total of 117 properties were planned on the site on the outskirts of Sutton-On-Sea but so far, under 20 have been finished.

The boarded up homes (pictured) have been there since 2010 when builders were last on the site.

A spokesman from the developer said they expected work to begin in the next few weeks with the first properties available to buy in the summer.

However, a group of campaigners in the village is planning a protest to encourage the developer Keir Homes to restart work.

    Quote Message

For people coming into the village this is the first thing they see, this is a holiday village and we want to make it attractive for visitors... But the first thing that people see is this dilapidated, neglected building site and that has an adverse affect on our village."

The Environment Agency says it's pleased people took action after its flood warnings for Boston last night, even though they came to nothing.

    flood spectators

In the past people hadn't taken as much action when the agency issued their flood warnings.

But after floods devastated parts of the town in 2013, it appears that people are now more keen to take action.

The Environment Agency said 77 properties were at risk of flooding at high tide last night.

Fortunately, spectators on the side of the River Haven saw nothing but an unusually high tide (pictured).

    Quote Message

It's always good people take the warnings seriously, we always want people to take action to protect themselves. Fortunately in this event the defences weren't overtopped and no one actually flooded and obviously we're pleased with that.

Boston's Quadrant development (pictured) will get £3.5m to kick-start further work.

It will help bring a football stadium, roads, shops and 500 new homes to the south of the town.

A brownfield site on Spa Road in Lincoln will have its land cleaned and prepared for a 312-home development for £2.8m

Last, but not least, the government has promised £2.1m to solve problems with roads and infrastructure around Gainsborough which have delayed a development of about 2,500 homes.

  19. 'Being a 'grid girl' makes me feel empowered'published at 17:36 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2018

A Lincolnshire model and "grid girl" has criticised plans by Formula 1 to stop the practice in their races.

    grid girl eleanor hinton

Formula 1 decided to end the practice of scantily-clad women parading between races because it was "no longer in keeping with the vision for the great sport".

Earlier in the week, the circuit manager at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire said that it's "completely their choice" if women want to be "grid girls".

Sean Bratches, managing director of commercial operations for the sport, said it "clearly is at odds with modern day societal norms".

But Eleanor Hinton, from Dunholme, near Lincoln, who has regular jobs as a "grid girl", says the decision has been taken because of "opinions from others that may not see the whole picture":

    Quote Message

It makes me feel very empowered and I think that's something that other girls feel. Without doing these jobs as well as modelling I don't think I would have blossomed into the girl I am today."
