Data obtained in December showed hospitals in England made a record £174m in parking charges in just a year.
Speaking in a debate in the Commons this afternoon, Martin Vickers (pictured), the Conservative MP for Cleethorpes, has urged the government to tackle the issue:
Quote MessageIt needs government action. It is unreasonable to expect trusts...they've got very major challenges of their own and an extra burden such as this is something they could well do without."
Martin Vickers, Cleethorpes MP
However, Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust has responded by saying parking charges go towards helping patients:
Quote MessageThe income from car parking in 2016-2017 was £2.28m and after costs were deducted there was a surplus of £750,000, which was spent on patient care."

Cyclists in Lincoln and Boston are a third more likely to be injured than in other parts of the country, according to new figures from the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership.
Lincolnshire County Council says both areas have a decent network of cycleways, but is always looking for ways to improve.
But despite the British Cycling Road Championships being held in the city in the past (pictured), some cyclists say Lincoln is "lethal" if you're on two wheels:
Quote MessageCompared to driving, it's not that safe...It's not good, it's intimidating, it's scary and there are things that could be better."

The Environment Agency says the high tide in Lincolnshire this evening is expected to be over 5m, which the agency says is a "significantly high level".
Despite this, the agency says it's "not expecting any overtopping of defences" which stand at a height of 5.8m.
Peter Riley, an operations manager at the agency, says there may be seepage through flood defences and via the drainage system, as happened in the 2013 floods (pictured).
Floodgates across the town have been closed since 14:00 this afternoon, according to Mr Riley.
He says: "What we don't want to do is wait until we're certain there will be a major effect only a few hours out from high tide and not give people enough prior warning. And, of course, in all of our modelling what we're attempting to do is to look into the future."
Quote MessageThere is of course uncertainty in that...but we don't issue these warnings lightly and there is risk to the public this evening."
Peter Riley, Operations manager for Lincolnshire, Environment Agency
The Environment Agency has issued seven flooding alerts on the coast from Whitby to north Norfolk.

The first issue of the Echo was published on 31 January 1893 (pictured).
It included offers for 50% off your gas bill, cures for rheumatism and gout, poetry and an advert for help to find a missing Collie Dog.
One hundred and twenty five years on, the newspaper has changed to a weekly printed edition, but continues with regularly updated online content.
Digital editor Adam Moss says the internet age provides fresh challenges for the paper:
Quote MessageWe have to change in order to continue. It's no secret that newspaper circulation is declining, but it is also very important that we embrace new types of media in order to survive for the future."

Flood warnings have been issued for parts of the coast in North Yorkshire, East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
The warnings have been issued in part because of the high tide caused by the super Moon which some of us saw last night.
This tide, caused by the combined gravitational pull of the moon and sun, moves down the east coast from north to south, and is being exacerbated by the current weather conditions.
Firstly, low pressure in the North Sea lifts the sea surface slightly.
Secondly, the strong to gale force northwesterly wind, blowing in the same direction as the tide, adds to its height.
In fact, conditions are not dissimilar to those of 31 January 1953, when a catastrophic tidal surge affected the east coast and the Low Countries.
Thankfully, nothing on that scale is expected in the next 24 hours.
Staff at the Boston Stump are working to make sure the iconic landmark is protected after a flood warning was issued for the town.
Quote MessagePlease pray for Boston that the waters do not breach the wall. Boston Stump just finished the repairs from 2013."

The Agency earlier issued a flood alert, warning people in Boston and on the Lincolnshire coast to be prepared.
They've now issued a Flood Warning, saying that "flooding is expected" and that "immediate action is required".
The main risk is to riverside properties on the banks of the Haven in the centre of the town.

The Environment Agency says stormy conditions are forecast, resulting in a large tidal surge moving down the East Coast of England this evening leading to unusually high tidal levels along tidal River Witham in Boston.
The tidal gates along Boston Haven will be closed ahead of high tide.
Figures which show a reduction in community police officers in Lincolnshire have been branded "misleading" by the county's Police and Crime commissioner.
BBC Figures show there are 145 fewer officers on the beat than there were in 2013.
The number of PCSOs has also dropped by 45 in the last five years.
But Marc Jones says that a previous system meant that Neighbourhood Police were also used as response officers, meaning that they were sometimes called away from street patrols, adding that's no longer the case.
Quote MessageNow neighbourhood police are ring-fenced and no longer called away. In fact, although the numbers of officers appear to have declined, I believe the hours dedicated to neighbourhood policing have changed little."
Marc Jones, Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner

A flood alert is in place for parts of Boston and the Lincolnshire coast tonight.
Stormy conditions are forecast which the Environment Agency says will result in a large tidal surge down the east coast. The peak is predicted to be at about 18:42 this evening.
The agency is advising caution on coastal footpaths, beaches and promenades and for riverside homes on the Haven in Boston.
It's thought that high winds could cause "wind-blown spray", "wave splash" and "localised pooling of water behind the sea defences" in coastal areas.
A flood alert is the lowest grade warning the Environment Agency issues for floods, below a Flood Warning and a Severe Flood Warning.

Vulnerable people living in Lincolnshire are being offered advice on home security, safety and mental health from the county's Fire and Rescue service.
Fire officers say the success of the Safe and Well Checks scheme means they can have better links with agencies to ensure groups such as the elderly can get more rounded support.
It's thought that the idea might help people feel less isolated in rural areas.
Quote MessageWhen we go into the property we might be the first person they've seen in a few days, so it's maybe just putting them into contact with the local call connect bus, it might be putting them in contact with local social groups so they're able to get out and do things that they want to do."
