  3. New EU plans put theatres in spotlightpublished at 09:48 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

A new EU rule could mean "lights out" for theatres across our region, it's being claimed.

    Theatres

Due to environmental concerns, The European Commission is considering banning tungsten bulbs and light fittings by 2020.

But some theatres say the cost of replacing lights would be "crippling", with the New Theatre Royal in Lincoln saying it would cost about £150,000 to replace its lights.

Both the East Riding Theatre in Beverley and the Embassy Theatre in Skegness say it would cost them "tens of thousands of pounds" to replace their lights.

    Quote Message

It's very hard to make ends meet as it is because we're an independent. We just don't have the funds to replace all the lighting in the theatre. I don't think we'd be able to survive, I think that would be it. If this was put into place, it would close us down."

But one of its councillors, Anton Dani, is worried crime will now increase.

    Quote Message

People will start doing drugs, kids will be probably having illegal drinks, illegal drugs, illegal cigarettes. We may have an infestation of crime, but let's hope not. I hope it will not happen and I hope the decision made was right to take them down."
