    A threatened species of fungi has been found at a 100-year-old orchard in Claybury Park, east London, and at Lambert’s Orchard in Horton Country Park, Epsom.

    In the last 50 years there have only been 32 recorded sightings of the Orchard Toothcrust (Sarcodontia crocea) fungus in the UK, and just five in London over the same period.

    The golden yellow fungus lives exclusively on old apple trees, and smells of pineapple when fresh, according to charity The Orchard Project, which made the discoveries.

    The family of a 41-year-old woman are growing increasingly concerned as she has now been missing more than a week.

    Katie Chopra is believed to be in Sussex, after going missing from her Hammersmith home on Tuesday 31 October.

    It is believed she travelled from west London to Eastbourne by train, arriving around 14:00 GMT.

    Katie is 5ft 8in tall and slim with short blonde hair.

    According to Sussex Police, she has been depressed recently and there is "natural concern for her welfare".

    The husband of a British-Iranian woman, in prison in Iran, has urged Boris Johnson to retract his remark that she had been training journalists in Iran.

    Richard Ratcliffe said Iranian officials were using the foreign secretary's statement to justify extending his wife Nazanin's jail term.

    Mr Johnson has called his Iranian counterpart to clarify the situation.

    Liam Fox said his cabinet colleague's comment was a "slip of the tongue" but Labour said it was "unacceptable".

    West Ham's decision to sack manager Slaven Bilic came as no surprise, with the formalities delivered on Monday after the heavy home defeat by Liverpool less than 48 hours earlier.

    What has come as a surprise, and one that concerns many West Ham fans judging by the instant reaction, is that former Everton and Manchester United boss David Moyes is succeeding Bilic.

    More than 130 families left homeless by the Grenfell Tower fire are living in emergency housing, MPs have heard.

    Communities Secretary Sajid Javid said Kensington and Chelsea Council's response in the aftermath of the fire had been "sluggish and chaotic".

    It comes as the Grenfell taskforce produced a report into the fire, which said the council "failed its community" on 14 June, external.

    Council leader Elizabeth Campbell said it had "huge" amounts of work to do.

    Oxford Street to go traffic-free

    Large parts of London's Oxford Street could be pedestrianised by December 2018, under plans put forward by London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

    About half a mile of the street from Oxford Circus to Orchard Street could become a "traffic-free pedestrian boulevard", the mayor said.

    He said he hoped it would coincide with the arrival of the Elizabeth Line in central London in December next year.

    More than four million people visit Oxford Street each week.

  9. Appeal after stabbing in east Londonpublished at 10:20 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2017

    Police have appealed for information after a man was stabbed in a fast food restaurant in east London.

    They have released CCTV of the stabbing in Mahins Pizza Peri Peri Grill on Station Road, Newham, on 6 October.

    Two people got into a fight with the 18-year-old victim, and one of them stabbed him three times as he tried escape from his attackers.

    The victim was taken to an east London hospital for treatment, and was later discharged.

    A woman seeking what is thought to be the UK's first crowdfunded private rape prosecution says she hopes to lead the way for those "let down" by the courts.

    Emily Hunt from London, who has waived her right to anonymity, claims she was drugged and raped in 2015.

    Police investigated, but the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) felt there was insufficient evidence to proceed with a case.

    Ms Hunt has hired a barrister who believes there are grounds for a criminal prosecution.

    A mother of five who posted a string of Islamic State propaganda on a dedicated Facebook group called Power Strangers is to be sentenced.

    Farhana Ahmed, 40, from north-west London, was a "prolific" contributor to the group, whose name appeared to play on the popular American teenage superhero film Power Rangers.

    The closed section, which had 1,406 members, described itself as a "pro-IS group, the purpose of it is to connect mawhideen brothers from different parts of the world and to help each other".

    In September Ahmed pleaded guilty to encouraging terrorism and three charges of dissemination of terrorist publications.

    West Ham have appointed David Moyes as their new manager.

    Negotiations for the 54-year-old former Everton, Manchester United and Sunderland boss to take over from the sacked Slaven Bilic progressed smoothly on Monday.

    Bilic left the club on Monday with the side in the Premier League relegation zone.

    It is anticipated Moyes will take training for the first time on Tuesday.

    Boris Johnson is expected to phone his counterpart in Iran later, amid fears that comments he made could lead to a woman having her jail sentence doubled.

    The foreign secretary last week said British-Iranian Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was "teaching" journalism when she was arrested in 2016.

    She is serving a five-year sentence, imposed over allegations of involvement in "propaganda against the regime".

    Her family maintains she was on holiday to visit family and is innocent.

    The District Line still has no service between Parsons Green and Wimbledon following yesterday’s derailment of a South Western Railways train at Wimbledon. Tickets will be accepted on London Buses, South Western Railway, Southern, Trams, London Overground and Thameslink. It could be out of action all day.

    London Overground has no service from Wandsworth Road to Clapham Junction because of a rail that broke yesterday.
