Part of the River Nene towpath near Northampton's Carlsberg factory is still cordoned off after yesterday's ammonia leak.

Darren Dovey, Northamptonshire's chief fire officer, said this was as a precaution to avoid anyone being alarmed by the possible smell of ammonia.

"If people were to walk along that section of the river, they might detect a faint bleach-like smell in the air, so we decided it was best to close the towpath," he said.

"But there is no risk to anybody outside of the site. The ammonia leak is confined to the site. None of our gas monitors at the extremities of the site have indicated any possible danger."

I've just chatted to the press office at Northamptonshire Police, whose officers are carrying out the gas leak investigation with the Health and Safety Executive at Carlsberg in Northampton.

A spokeswoman told me officers were still trying to make the site safe so staff and investigators can try and work out exactly what happened.

But other than that, there's not a lot more to say at this stage. The post-mortem examination on the victim, in his 40s, has yet to take place and it could be a while until full operations resume at the site.

We're hoping we can ask the county council why this side of the Welland Valley seems to be the worst-affected by poor bus services. Is it because we pay tax to Kettering Borough Council but have a Leicestershire postal code?"

  17. What is ammonia?published at 14:11 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2016

Yesterday's tragic incident at Carlsberg in Northampton was sparked by an ammonia gas leak. But what is it?

According to Public Health England, external, ammonia is a colourless, reactive gas that is lighter than air (approximately half as heavy) and dissolves readily in water.
