  9. 'NH1' number plate could be worth close to £300kpublished at 15:59 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2016

    Sam Read
    BBC Radio Northampton politics reporter

I tried to find out how much the "NH1" number plate would be worth.

I had one valuation of £50,000 and one of nearly £300,000.

Like all these things, it depends who is going in on an auction.

Opinions are mixed on whether it should be sold, with Lib Dem group leader on the borough council Sally Beardsworth (pictured) not supporting the idea of sale, saying the number plate was a gift to the borough.

However, there is more support of the idea of eventually replacing the mayoral car, a Jaguar which cost £38,000 in 2014, with a hybrid car, which is already the case in Daventry and Corby.

The ruling Conservative borough council says the car costs £1,500-a-year to run and is a "practical and cost-effective transport option" compared to taxis.

  10. Councillor wants debate on whether mayoral 'NH1' number plate should be soldpublished at 15:44 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2016

    Pete Cooper
    BBC Local Live

There are calls for a review to see if the personalised number plate on Northampton's mayoral car "NH1" could be sold to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Borough councillors will also discuss whether the Jaguar car should be replaced with a hybrid.

The issue is being raised by the Labour councillor and current deputy mayor, Gareth Eales.

    Gareth Eales

"This is about debating whether an asset should be sold - that happens to be the mayoral car - and use that money for other services," he said.
