  2. Carlsberg reports 'safety incident' at Northampton sitepublished at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

    A statement has just been released by Carlsberg: "Earlier today there was a safety incident within the Carlsberg UK brewery on Bridge Street, Northampton. 

    "At this stage the emergency services are on site and are managing the situation.

    "We will provide further updates as soon as we are in position to do so."

    For those who don't know, Carlsberg is based near the centre of the town off St Peter's Way.

    The East Midlands Ambulance Service has released a short statement about the suspected ammonia leak at Carlsberg.

    "Our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), who have specialist training and equipment to deal with chemical related incidents, are at the scene with several of our Northampton ambulance crews, who will remain there to assess patients and support police and fire." 

    So far the service has released no further details regarding if anyone has been hurt.

    Police, fire and ambulance services are currently dealing with an incident at Carlsberg in Northampton.

    A fire officer told the BBC that it's believed to be an ammonia leak.

    So what's been the reaction so far to Donald Trump winning the presidential election?

    Former University of Northampton lecturer, David Morgan, who has been working for the Clinton campaign in Virginia, says Trump will need to heal some deep divisions.

    Meanwhile, American politics lecturer, Ron Mendell, says: "It's hard to know what a Donald Trump presidency will look like. There's a lot of fear around and he needs to address that".

    Northampton Town drew their lowest ever crowd of 762 last night for their EFL Trophy game against West Ham's development squad.

    The Cobblers, who were already out of the competition, lost 3-2 on penalties after the teams drew 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes.

    The competition, which has been revamped by the English Football League this season, has been characterised by low attendances.

  10. East Midlands rail disruption: Tickets accepted on other routespublished at 09:38 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

    Network Rail says ticket acceptance is in place, external on other routes for those on East Midlands services affected by the disruption on routes into London this morning. 

    Advance purchase tickets may be used on other trains and can also be used for travel tomorrow.

    Rail tickets will also be accepted on the following routes, operated by either London Midland, CrossCountry, Virgin Trains or Virgin Trains East Coast:

    • Sheffield to London King's Cross via Doncaster
    • Derby to London Euston via Birmingham
    • Nottingham to London King's Cross via Grantham
    • Leicester to London Euston via Birmingham

    For those who haven't been following the story, here's what happened between 2009 and 2013 relating to Northampton Borough Council's loan to the Cobblers.

    • August 2009: Northampton Borough Council (NBC) rejects initial development proposal from Northampton Town Football Club (NTFC) then approves revised plan. Deal does not go ahead
    • May 2011: Council control changes from Lib Dems to Conservatives
    • November 2011: David Mackintosh becomes leader
    • June 2013: Chief finance officer Isabell Procter leaves NBC
    • July 2013: NBC cabinet approves in principle multimillion-pound loan to NTFC
    • September 2013: First £1.5m tranche of loan paid to NTFC then transferred to County (Oundle) Ltd

    A council which lost £10.25m in a loan to a football club handed over the money despite previous concerns about the club's finances, it has emerged.

    Senior figures at Northampton Borough Council were not prepared to proceed with an initial development proposal four years earlier, without safeguards.

    But weeks after the chief finance officer left in June 2013, a loan to Northampton Town FC was approved.

    The disappearance of the money is now subject to a police investigation.

    Passengers on East Midlands trains have been advised to check before travelling after a power failure on Tuesday afternoon affected services.

    Damage was caused to the overhead wires at Luton and while Network Rail was able to fix these, the damage caused a signalling problem. 

    Network Rail has apologised for the inconvenience.

    East Midlands trains, external said Network Rail teams had worked through the night to fix the problem but "at the moment our trains will be disrupted throughout the morning and into the afternoon".

    It said it is running an amended service into London, external today and "alternative routes remain the best option".

    It has also tweeted, external that passengers can use their tickets tomorrow if they are affected by today's disruption and its website, external says they can apply for a refund if they decide not to travel.

    A football game might lift your spirits and Northampton Town, external play their final game in the EFL Trophy tonight as the West Ham Academy visit Sixfields. 

    Both are already out of the competition and this evening's game may effectively be a dead rubber but both sides may play some entertaining football.

  20. Overhead line problem causes widespread train disruptionpublished at 17:53 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2016

    East Midlands and Thameslink train services have been hit by major delays because of "damage to overhead wires" at Luton, National Rail said. 

    The main services affected are East Midlands trains between Corby, Nottingham, Sheffield and London St Pancras.

    Thameslink services between Bedford, Luton and Three Bridges, Sutton, Sevenoaks and Gatwick Airport are also delay-hit. Services may be amended, cancelled or delayed by up to 90 minutes. 

    Although its engineers are attending, Network Rail expects disruption to continue until the end of service today and has apologised.

    A replacement bus is running between Kettering and Corby as well as between Wellingborough and Northampton. Auxiliary road transport is also shuttling between St Albans and Bedford, a Network Rail spokesman said.

    "Due to a piece of cable coming into contact with the overhead electric lines at Luton station we are currently unable to run trains through the area," the spokesman said.
