There's not much to see at the Carlsberg plant this morning, following yesterday's ammonia gas leak which led to the death of an employee.

I can see a couple of lorries parked up and some cars inside the main entrance, but no sign of emergency vehicles. Production has been stopped while an investigation takes place into what happened.

    Carlsberg, Northampton

Details are still fairly scarce as to what happened here, but we know 50 firefighters and a number of ambulances were called to the Northampton site yesterday lunchtime.

Ammonia is used in the brewing process and for refrigeration and cleaning. Carlsberg is confident the leak posed no wider risk to the public, but can't comment on the incident itself because of the ongoing investigation.

  5. Homes approved on former football pitchpublished at 09:28 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2016

    Football pitch

Planning permission has been approved for 27 houses on a former football pitch in Weldon.

The land, off Oundle Road near Corby, was once used by Weldon Football Club but people living in the village say it's always been a play area for local children.

Objections to the planning application were raised by the parish council and MP Tom Pursglove, as well as local residents.

Corby Borough councillor Rob McKellar, who was at the development control committee meeting, said there were angry scenes in the public gallery from objectors.

Mulberry Developments, which owns the site, said: "We are pleased to finally receive planning permission to bring forward new housing and facilitate the relocation of Weldon United Football Club to Rockingham Triangle."

Work to clear the site is expected to start in the new year.

    BBC News

A statement we had overnight from Julian Momen, chief executive officer of Carlsberg UK, said: "We are deeply, deeply saddened by today's tragic incident and subsequent fatality.

"Our immediate thoughts are with the individual's family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time and we will support them in every way we can.

"Our further thoughts and support are with our colleagues and members of the emergency services who are being treated in hospital. One of our colleagues remains in a serious, but stable condition.

"Nothing is more important to us than the safety of everyone working for us. We are working closely with the authorities to investigate how this tragic incident occurred and we will be in a position to say more once a full investigation has been concluded."

East Midlands Trains, external is running a "near normal" timetable into London today following yesterday's disruption, as network Rail works to repair a signalling problem at Luton.

However, delays of up to 60 minutes can be expected and there will be no direct trains between London St Pancras International and Corby.

Trains or buses will run between Corby and Kettering, and then you will need to change at Kettering for trains to London St Pancras International.

In a stroke of coincidence I was in the fire service control room in Daventry when officers first got the call about a suspected ammonia leak at Carlsberg in Northampton.

When I arrived at the brewery you could smell something in the air. A company spokesman wouldn't confirm the leak or say whether anyone had been taken to hospital, but I did see the air ambulance take off when I was on site.

All the spokesman said was that people had been treated at the scene, but he would not divulge further information.

I saw a number of staff going in and out of the main building, so it's clearly not in lockdown - and to anyone passing by it wouldn't be obvious that anything was going on.
