Bonfire and firework displays across the East Midlands have been cancelled due to bad weather.

The displays at West Park in Long Eaton, High Lea Park in New Mills, Joseph's Catholic Voluntary Academy in Market Harborough and Newark Rugby Club are among the events which have been cancelled or rescheduled.

Talking about the Long Eaton display, which was due to take place tomorrow, Erewash borough councillor Mike Wallis said: "West Park is not going to be in a fit state for such a big event that attracts thousands of people. So we have, reluctantly, made the decision to cancel."

Meanwhile, organisers of the New Mills bonfire said it had been rescheduled from Saturday to 9 November due to "uncertainty over weather and wind conditions this weekend".

Club officials at Newark Rugby Club said after the pitches were flooded earlier this week, they have moved the display from 5 November to 10 November to allow the pitches to recover.

Organisers of the Market Harborough display said Saturday's event has been cancelled due to the school playing field being waterlogged and the bad weather forecast for tomorrow.

  4. Beeston plumber falls victim to Google search changepublished at 08:44 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2019

A husband and wife in Beeston fear the reputation of their small business could have been damaged after their contact number was changed on Google.

Paul Allen, a plumber, was recently contacted by a women who had emergency work carried out on her home.

She said she'd called the number listed on Google for Paul Allen Plumbing, and the person that came out to her claimed to be working on behalf of the company.

Paul's wife Teresa Allen said the man had "not done a proper job" and charged a lot of money.

The couple, who admit to not being very tech-savvy, checked the number and realised it had been changed.

In an attempt to get the bottom of the number change, they called the number listed and were told they must have sold the number - something the Allens say is not true.

Mrs Allen said one of their customers helped them by contacting Google and getting their number relisted.

"I'm upset about it because it doesn't look good for our name," she said.

She also said it was "frightening" because they don't know how long the wrong number was listed on Google and if more of their potential customers had similar experiences.

The couple said they did not report the incident to the police.

  12. Fears for takeaway van in 'elderly person's area'published at 16:50 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2019

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

A group of residents say they fear a planned takeaway van will attract rats, drunks, anti-social behaviour and give off a "smell".

But the man who wants to run it says there is “very high demand” for the food it will cook and sell in the Thurnby Lodge area.

Ismail Motara said the van will reduce pollution as people will no longer need to travel out of the area to fetch similar meals.

An application for a licence to run the van has been made to Leicester City Council but four people living near Gervas Road, where Mr Motara wants to run a Ziims Foods van, have written to the council opposing the plans.

One resident of nearby Ocean Road, who is in his 70s, said: “I don’t want to sit in my house on a hot day with the windows closed due to the noise and smell of a takeaway van.

"There will be an increase in rubbish. There will be an increase in kids/drunks hanging around. This will prevent many of the local elderly residents using the shops and will make them feel vulnerable."

Other letters raised concerns about rats, traffic and anti-social behaviour in what one complainant described as a “generally quiet elderly person's area”.

In his street trade licence application Mr Motara says the van will sell “all halal food, chips, burgers, hot dogs, healthy Indian food and drinks”.

He said: “There is not a business like the one we are offering."

Customers will be able to buy food from the truck or make telephone orders for collection or delivery.

A decision will be made on Tuesday morning.
