"They look like great fun and we believe it's the first time they have been seen like this anywhere in Europe.

"I'm also delighted we are using the new tree at The Spot. It certainly makes sense for us to spread the Christmas cheer a bit more widely across the city centre."

Mr Barker said the council is still negotiating the final price for the presents, but said it will be less than the ice rink, which he said cost the council £36,000 to rent annually.

  13. Chesterfield doctor suspended over misconductpublished at 16:21 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October 2019

    Eddie Bisknell
    Local Democracy Reporter

A Derbyshire doctor has been handed another suspension due to "serious misconduct".

Stephen Macshane, who had worked as an associate specialist in emergency medicine at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, has been handed a six-month suspension, which comes after an initial four-month suspension given to him by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service in May.

The first hearing, brought by the General Medical Council (GMC), had found that two years ago, Dr Macshane had "lied repeatedly" to colleagues about the identification of a dead patient.

At a further hearing in October, Ryan Donoghue, on behalf of the GMC, said he had "very little engagement and has seemingly not developed any insight", and said a further suspension "would have a deterrent effect and would mark the seriousness of Dr Macshane's misconduct".

The tribunal concluded Dr Macshane's misconduct was "serious, but that it is not fundamentally incompatible with continued registration".

Police have cancelled a Taser firing demonstration at the Knife Angel in Derby after receiving a complaint from a member of the public.

The demonstration of the device was due to involve an officer firing a Taser at a colleague at about 13:00 this afternoon.

Derbyshire Police have sent firearms officers, Taser officers and dog handling teams to the site to inform the public about their roles and to help combat knife crime.

A spokesman for the force said they had received a complaint from a member of the public last week that a Taser firing would be inappropriate.

The force reviewed its plans for the event and decided to go ahead with a Taser display instead - without firing the device.

In the display, officers showed a Taser to members of the public by the Knife Angel and explained its use.

The Knife Angel is outside Derby Cathedral and has been visited by 125,000 people since 1 October.

It's also known as the National Monument Against Violence and Aggression.

  19. Derby bridge closed for two weekspublished at 13:10 Greenwich Mean Time 28 October 2019

    Samantha Fisher
    BBC News Online

A bridge in Derby has been closed for two weeks while flood gates are installed.

There is a diversion for motorists while the work on Exeter Bridge, in Derwent Street, is carried out but pedestrians will still be able to use it.

Derwent Street has been one-way since June to pave and realign the road, as well as create new flood defences behind the Riverside Chambers and Full Street. However, it will be fully shut while four new gates are built.

This £95m project is to help protect the city from flooding.

Councillor Matthew Holmes, deputy leader of Derby City Council, said: "This project is not just about ensuring the city is better equipped to avoid a significant future flooding event, it is about delivering regeneration to areas of the city."

Ilkeston Town said their previous statement, which they have retracted, included "several inaccuracies" and apologised for any distress it caused Mr Hardy and his business.

The club added it wishes to concentrate on cementing a play-off place.
