    Shrewsbury manager Micky Mellon says he is in no rush to sign more players, after bringing in 12 new faces over the summer.

    He said he has a good mix in the squad now, with strong characters, lots of ambition and hunger to improve.

    Mellon has also pointed towards the youth in the squad and the flexibility he has to change the formation of the team, during a match if necessary.

    A number of gardens in Telford, including fountains and a waterfall, will be smartened up, external with the help of a £49,440 grant.

    Telford and Wrekin Council says the money from the SUEZ Communities Trust, external will be spent on the Chelsea and the Maxell Cherry Gardens.

    The Chelsea Gardens are a series of gardens exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show between 1976-1979 and the Maxell Cherry Garden is a Japanese garden featuring cherry trees designed around a water cascade and a carp pool.

    Part of the River Teme has become so dry the Environment Agency has had to rescue over 100 salmon and more than 25 trout.

    The fish have been moved downstream, beyond the point where the Teme merges with the River Clun.

    A similar operation, to rescue more than 100 fish, took place last month.

    Telford Magistrates' Court has heard that weeks before cutting the heads off her pet snakes, 28-year-old Jennifer Lampe from Market Drayton drowned her hamster in a fish tank.

    RSPCA prosecutor Roger Price told court she then "put the dead hamster in a chest freezer" and on another occasion she had admitted putting an unwanted cat in a carrier bag, taking it on a "long bus ride" and then releasing the animal.

    She had successfully disposed of a second cat which she "dumped behind a fence".

    Ambulances, 4x4 vehicles and 200 staff and volunteers, external are going to be sent to this year's V Festival in Staffordshire, the ambulance service says. 

    West Midlands Ambulance Service says early indications are for a mixed weekend of weather so it's preparing for all conditions.

    It says at last year's event, medics treated just over 1,000 patients with 36 being taken to hospital. 

    The charity St John Ambulance says it will also have staff on-site and describe it as "one of the biggest first aid operations of the year".

  8. Woman avoids jail after chopping heads off pet snakespublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 18 August 2016

    A Market Drayton woman who admitted chopping the heads off her pet snakes using scissors and a kitchen knife has been given a four-month suspended sentence by Telford magistrates.

    Jennifer Lampe was found by police with her reptiles' severed heads in her pockets after drinking seven cans of lager and shots of amaretto.

    She has also been banned from keeping animals for five years.

    The 28-year-old said she feared she was about to be made homeless and would be unable to look after the boa constrictor and bull python.

    This week we have chosen Burcote as the BBC Radio Shropshire place of the week and we've been to visit a cattle-rearing facility there, run by the Breakwell family.

    There are over 120 young calves in the barn we were shown, learning to drink from mechanical milk-feeders.

    In another barn there was a similar number of older calves.

  10. Concern over GHA directors involvement in new service bidpublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 18 August 2016

    Concerns have been raised that two brothers who ran the collapsed coach firm GHA have bid to run some of its abandoned routes - under a different company.

    The Ruabon-based company GHA went into administration in July with the loss of 320 jobs after failing to pay a tax bill.

    Now it has been revealed GHA's former directors, Arwyn Lloyd Davies and his brother Gareth, are registered as directors with two companies which have won contracts from Wrexham council - RJ's of Wem Limited and RML2418 Ltd.

    The BBC has attempted to contact the Davies brothers for comment.

    Last year over 1,000 patients were treated for a variety of injuries at the V Festival at Weston Park, with 36 taken to hospital.

    This year there will be around 200 medical staff on the site, including some from St John Ambulance, as well as the West Midlands Ambulance Service.

    The students I spoke to at New College in Wellington this morning seemed pleased with their A-level results.

    And there was relief too, after all the waiting, with Thomas Billington telling me "I feel like I've just come out of a limbo state".

    He and Amber Mansell have both won places at Southampton University and she said: "I was just shaking the whole morning, I didn't know what to do."

    The vice-principal responsible for the curriculum, Jean Wright, said that she'd noticed more students getting unconditional offers from universities this year, possibly because they were keen to fill spaces.

    But she also said there'd been a lot of interest from students in apprenticeships.

    RAF Shawbury's professional photographer has won the RAF photographer of the year award.

    Ian Forshaw has worked at the base since 1986 and was sent out on over 600 assignments last year.

    He submitted nine photos to the judges, including this one of a firefighter extinguishing flames on a Shawbury training simulator.

    On Midlands Today this lunchtime, the university admissions service UCAS says a record number of students have been offered places on courses.

    It comes as thousands of teenagers across the West Midlands receive their A-level results.

  20. Share offer this winter to raise funds for railwaypublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 18 August 2016

    The Severn Valley Railway says it will be selling shares this winter to help raise funds for a major overhaul of Bridgnorth station.

    The work is expected to cost around £5m and the railway says all the money raised from the share issue will be spent on this project.

    SVR Infrastructure Manager Chris Bond said that since the railway opened in Bridgnorth in 1965 a lot of the focus of its efforts had been at the Worcestershire end of the line - and it was now time to redress the balance.
