  1. Calls for barracks buildings to be protectedpublished at 13:40 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

    The planned demolition of all but the central building at Copthorne barracks is upsetting some people - including the local councillor, Peter Nutting, who wants more of the buildings protected.

    The MoD would be within its rights to knock everything down, because the site isn't within a conservation area and the buildings aren't listed, but after conversations with Shropshire Council, it has agreed to leave the building known as Caldwell Keep - which will form a centre-piece of any new development there.

    While Shropshire Council only has the power to approve the way in which the demolition is carried out, officers have also said they would like to see more structures on the site retained.

    A "very limited" number of extra tickets are available today for the visit of the Flying Scotsman , externalto the Severn Valley Railway.

    The heritage line says due to the reallocation of some pre-booked seats on selected trains, a very limited number of tickets have become available to travel for the visit of the locomotive from 21 - 26 September.

  3. Ten people hurt in M54 crashespublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

    Eight people have been injured in the three-vehicle accident which has closed a large part of the M54 today.

    One man, who is in his 70s, flown to hospital with a head injury and two people had to be cut free from their cars by the fire service.

    Three children were among those involved, but none were seriously hurt.

    Earlier, two motorcyclists were injured on the M54 heading east between junctions three and two.

    One was treated for back and chest pain, while the other suffered and arm injury and both were taken to hospital.

    AFC Telford United have won their first game of the season, beating Stalybridge 2-0 at the Bucks Head.

    Tom Peers put them ahead on the hour-mark and Dave Hibbert added a second late-on.

    The Telford manager Rob Smith said afterwards that Hibbert had been their best player of the season and revealed he had been getting frustrated by his lack of goals.

  6. Severn Valley Railway gets permission for Bridgnorth expansionpublished at 12:22 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

    Severn Valley Railway has got planning permission for a multimillion-pound expansion at Bridgnorth. 

    The station building will be expanded, creating a café, a larger pub and improved toilet facilities.

    The plans, which have been in the pipeline for more than three years, also include a 53-bed hostel for volunteers who work at the heritage railway. 

  7. Football: Mellon highlights individual errors after defeatpublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

    Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon says his side gave away goals through individual errors in their 3-0 defeat last night.

    The side have failed to score in their three league games this season, but Mellon said it was too early in the season to worry about that and said the players were creating chances.

    Shrewsbury have played Milton Keynes, Coventry and Charlton this season, three teams Mellon manager believes will be finishing near the top of the table.

  8. Travel: Delays continue on M54published at 12:01 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

    There are long delays on the M54 heading west towards Shrewsbury and queuing traffic stretches back past junction five for Telford now.

    Vehicles are being taken on a 33-mile (53km) diversion past Randlay and Hodnet, rejoining the A49 at Battlefield, north of Shrewsbury.

    Meanwhile, delays caused by an accident on the M54 between junction three for Albrighton and two for Wolverhampton have cleared up.

    The West Midlands was one of only two regions in the UK to see unemployment rise between April and June, official figures indicate.

    Across the UK the total fell by 52,000 to 1.64 million - in the West Midlands it increased by 18,000 to 173,000, external compared with January to March. 

    The only other region to see unemployment rise was London where it rose by 7,000 people.

    The Shropshire-based horse rider Carlos Parro, is back in the county, after competing for Brazil at the Rio Olympics last week.

    Parro helped his home country Brazil to seventh place in the eventing team jumping final.

    The A5 is closed westbounds from the M54 J7 near Wellington as far as the Preston Island.

     It's due to a crash on the approach to the Preston Island on outskirts of Shrewsbury, not helped by the earlier lorry fire and fuel spill nearer Wellington.

  13. Barracks plans go on showpublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

    Plans for the redevelopment of Copthorne Barracks in Shrewsbury are to go on show this afternoon. 

    Most of the site's been empty, apart from a section used by the reservists, since last year and there are proposals to build homes there.

    Those go on show at Shrewsbury Town's stadium this afternoon.

    The tower on Copthorne Road will remain, but the rest will be pulled down imminently.

    Peter Nutting, councillor for the Copthorne Ward, has called for some of the buildings and open spaces to protected.
