  2. Fire service concern over dry weather that could lead to serious firespublished at 12:21 British Summer Time 18 August 2016

    Firefighters in Shropshire are warning of a "very significant" risk of fire due to the recent hot weather. 

    The Met Office has given the county a fire risk of four out of five.

    Earlier in the week there was a blaze at a railway embankment at Eardington, near Bridgnorth.

    Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are particularly concerned about cigarette ends and discarded bottles.

    I've been at New College in Wellington this morning, to see students collect their A-level results.

    There are about 1,000 students opening their envelopes today and the college said over 20 courses had produced a 100% pass rates.

  5. Bridgnorth station work could start next Octoberpublished at 11:33 British Summer Time 18 August 2016

    A £5m scheme to improve Bridgnorth's station on the Severn Valley Railway is likely to be carried out in three phases, with the first phase starting next October.

    The railway plans to start by restoring the original bar and waiting rooms, as well as creating a new buffet and toilets - all in the style of GWR buildings from the 1900s.

    The second phase will involve the installation of a new turntable for engines and improvements to the car park at the top of the site.

    And the final phase of the plans will be the building of a 53-bed accommodation block for volunteers.

  7. Original Lady Penelope puppet to sell at Whitchurch auctionpublished at 11:02 British Summer Time 18 August 2016

    An original Lady Penelope puppet from the Thunderbirds TV series is going to be sold at auction in Whitchurch this Saturday.

    The model, which was used between 1964 and 1968 is expected to fetch up to £20,000 and the auctioneer, Christina Trevanion, said they'd already had offers.

  8. Thousands collect A-level resultspublished at 10:41 British Summer Time 18 August 2016

    Thousands of students across Shropshire are picking up their A-level results this morning.

    Already several schools and colleges are claiming record pass-rates, despite a slight drop across the UK.

    Concord College had just over 95% passing with A-star, A or B grades. 

    Adams Grammar in Newport had 80% passing with an A-star, A or B grade. Its head Gary Hickey said it was a "privilege to witness pupils you've worked with since the age of 11 - see all their hard work come to fruition." 

    Elsewhere, the Maelor at Penley is reporting 43% A or A-star grades. 

    At the Sir John Talbot sixth-form in Whitchurch, just under two-thirds got at least one A-star, A or B. Head David O'Toole said he was "incredibly proud".

  9. Dalian Atkinson: Campaigner calls for rigorous investigationpublished at 10:29 British Summer Time 18 August 2016

    A rights activist is calling for a "rigorous and transparent" investigation into the death of ex-Aston Villa footballer Dalian Atkinson after he was shot with a police Taser.

    The 48-year-old died after West Mercia Police shot him with a stun gun in the street where he grew up in Telford, Shropshire, in the early hours of Monday. 

    A petition calling on the prime minister to urgently review police use of Tasers, external has gathered more than 56,000 signatures.

    Desmond Jaddoo, an activist from Birmingham who campaigns to raise awareness about the deaths of black men after police contact, says officers have questions to answer over Mr Atkinson's death.

    The death of the ex-striker is being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission, external which said it would carry out "a full and thorough" inquiry.

  11. Football: Shawbury out of FA Cuppublished at 09:41 British Summer Time 18 August 2016

    Shawbury United have been thrown out of the FA Cup after their recent replay with Coventry United was abandoned with a few minutes to go.

    The game had a long delay after an injury to a Shawbury player and when it was about to restart, with Shawbury losing 1-0, the floodlights went off. 

    An FA commission has awarded the game to Coventry and told Shawbury that a failure to improve what they do could jeopardise playing in the FA Cup in the future.  

  12. Search continues for missing manpublished at 09:25 British Summer Time 18 August 2016

    The family of a Shropshire farmer who disappeared two months ago has issued an appeal to find him. 

    Andrew Green, was last seen on 22 June just before 21:00 on his farm in Chorley, near Bridgnorth.

    His car was later found nearby. His family say his disappearance is out of character and they've urged anyone with information to contact the police.

    A Shropshire light infantry veteran has been given a mobility scooter by the Armed Forces charity SSAFA.

    Steve Lobb from Ellesmere has a degenerative brain condition which has left him unable to walk and his wife contacted the charity for help.
