  2. Your Questions: Why do people refer to 'south Shropshire', but not 'east or west Shropshire'? published at 12:09 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2017

    Andy Giddings
    BBC Shropshire

Here's an interesting question asked by Natasha Leigh-Willetts: "Why is south Shropshire referred as such? You don't hear east Shropshire or west Shropshire."

We think the answer could have something to do with the old South Shropshire District Council, which was created in the mid-1970s and then absorbed into Shropshire Council in 2009.

Further back in history there was once a South Shropshire parliamentary constituency.

    Cardingmill Valley

Similarly, North Shropshire is often referred to because there was a North Shropshire District Council before 2009 and there is still a North Shropshire constituency.

East and west Shropshire haven't had the same shared political history.

Another theory is that maybe east Shropshire is more diverse, with towns like Telford, Bridgnorth and Newport sharing less in common that the largely rural south Shropshire.

If you have questions you'd like us to investigate, we'd love to hear them.

  6. Hydro-electric scheme droppedpublished at 10:26 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2017

The people behind plans to generate electricity from the River Severn in Shrewsbury are blaming subsidy cuts for the cancellation of the scheme.

Shrewsbury Hydro were hoping to be up and running by March 2018.

But delays in leasing the land they need - near the town's weir - means that won't happen, so the guaranteed-price they would get for electricity would have dropped by more than half.
