  6. Medieval seal gives clues to original ownerpublished at 17:30 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2017

A medieval seal found in a field near Wrockwardine appears to have an interesting story to tell.

The inscription translates as "counter-seal of Roger of Veiloreave - clerk" and the Shropshire Finds Liason Officer, Peter Revill speculates the unusual name may have Welsh origins.

Mr Reavill also says clerks were often clergymen at this time and the image of a priest on the seal could be a picture of its owner.

And he explains this type of seal would have been used for the closing of personal letters.

    Quote Message

The fact that it is exceptionally well made in good quality silver indicates that the original owner was relatively rich. As a cleric who could read and write Roger would have been an important person who potentially wielded considerable administrative power."
