  2. Man pleads guilty to setting ex's car on firepublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    A man from north Shropshire has admitted setting fire to his ex-partner's car in a revenge attack. 

    Daniel Williamson from Treflach near Oswestry has been warned he faces a jail term.

    The 25-year-old set fire to Melanie Sim's car in Meifod last month. He's been in the dock at Mold Crown Court today where he pleaded guilty.

    The judge remanded Williamson in custody for three weeks while probation officers write a report on him before sentencing - but told him to prepare for "an immediate custodial sentence". 

  3. Council refuses quarry planspublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Councillors have officially opposed plans for a new quarry and landfill site near Newport.

    The decision was taken at a meeting last night, but the final decision on the plans will be made by a planning inspector in November. 

    Telford and Wrekin Council's Conservative group leader Andrew Eade - whose ward of Church Aston is near the site on Pave Lane - says the borough doesn't need the sand and gravel or landfill.

  4. Local elections: How many candidates are each party putting forward? published at 16:42 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Labour will contest fewer than half the seats at next month's elections to Shropshire Council. 

    The party's fielding 31 candidates - that's four less than the Greens.

    The Labour party in Shropshire are promising to invest in public services as their May election campaign gets under way. 

    There's no poll in Telford and Wrekin this time round.

    Police have arrested a driver on Holyhead Road in Ketley after a drugs test came back positive.

    A car and a tractor have crashed at the cross roads in Crudgington near Telford this morning. 

    An occupant in the car was freed from the wreckage by firefighters. 

    Police and the ambulance service were also there.

    English Heritage is seeking the help of the public to track and monitor the moths .  

    Visitors to its sites will be able to collect a free clothes moth trap to place in their home, to help monitor the presence and type of moths.

    The collected data will be used to help the charity decide how moths are spreading and how best to focus their conservation efforts.

    Fire officers say arsonists on Woodside are putting lives at risk. 

    Eight cars have been set alight in the last three weeks. The most recent attack at the weekend damaged a total of four vehicles.

  13. Why is the supermarket plan at Shrewsbury Town controversial? published at 12:54 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Plans to build a Lidl supermarket at Shrewsbury Town's stadium have been ongoing for a number of years. 

    Shropshire Council granted planning permission for the store, but there's a covenant that says the land earmarked for it must be used for community sports pitches.   

    The store would take up part of the land fronting Oteley Road where the current Power League pitches are.

    The club is offering to move those pitches to where the current STFC training pitch is, at the back of the stadium. That site is set to become redundant when the team moves its training base from the Meadow to its revamped Sundorne site for next season.

    Shrewsbury Town is offering to pay £65,000 to improve sports provision in the county if a new Lidl supermarket is allowed on its land. 

    The issue is being reconsidered at a planning meeting next week after councillors threatened to turn it down earlier this year.

    Sport England is against the proposals because it says there's not enough information about new community pitches. 

    The club's moving its own training facilities to Sundorne and says that'll free up extra land. Council planning experts are recommending it should be allowed.

  19. 'No benefit to baby screening'published at 10:25 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    The UK National Screening Committee has  recommended against a national screening programme, external .

    It says there is no way to predict which babies will be affected by the disease and which will be born without complications.  

    In its recommendation, the committe said there was "serious concern that large numbers of women will be offered and take antibiotics when they do not need to ".

    A Shropshire mother who lost her one-day-old baby to a Strep B infection says all pregnant women should be routinely screened. 

    One in five women are carriers of the bacterial infection, which can be passed on to babies at birth.

    Shrewsbury coronor John Ellery, while recording a narrative verdict, told mum Kayleigh Griffiths yesterday that the death of baby Pippa was preventable. 

    Jane Plumb who founded charity  Group B Strep Support, external  with her husband Robert when they lost their baby Theo at just 17 hours old says there is evidence that testing does work.
