  1. Your comments: Farmer calls for tougher penalties for owners of animals that attack livestockpublished at 14:37 British Summer Time 3 August 2017

We told you earlier about a farmer's calls for tougher laws to penalise owners whose dogs attack and kill livestock.

Fifty-six ewes and lambs belonging to Tom Hadley were killed or had to be destroyed after they were attacked by two dogs owned by Charles Ross Robertson, from Stanton Lacy, south Shropshire, in September last year.

Ross Robertson was given a 12-month community order yesterday and ordered to pay £3,500 compensation over three years, while the dogs were ordered to be destroyed.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust said "only a very small amount of cladding is present" in its buildings and the assessment "shows it to be of low risk due to its location and the nature of its construction".

    Elizabeth Glinka

    A cow being fed

Both sites say they'll announce later in the year when the first students will start but already say they've had high demand for places.

Officials at Harper Adams University say they've heard from farmers saying fewer vets want to look after farm animals compared to pets and they're hoping their new school will help plug any gap.

    Quote Message

Talking to vets right across the UK, I know that there have been difficulties in recruiting, especially in the farm animal sector. And with our roots and traditions in agriculture, that's obviously going to be a very strong emphasis and may attract students here because of our agricultural background
