  5. Temporary traffic lights to remain until next springpublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

The temporary traffic lights which were set up at the Upton crossroads just outside Shifnal in April 2016 are going to be replaced with signs which light up to warn motorists about traffic waiting at the junction.

But Shropshire Council says they won't be in place until next spring.

It has looked into the possibility of installing permanent traffic lights there, but concluded it would need to buy additional land beside the road - and that would take too long, and be too expensive.

    Quote Message

We are very mindful of the traffic delays and inconvenience that have been experienced since April 2016 when the temporary traffic signals were installed as a holding measure."

  6. Biker dies weeks after crashpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

A motorcyclist who crashed his bike in June has died in hospital.

Police say the 51-year-old's bike left the B5062 between Roden and High Ercall and ended up in a grass verge and that he was initially discharged after receiving treatment at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

He was later re-admitted and died on Saturday 22 July.

Staffordshire Police says it is investigating the circumstances around the man's death.

  9. Review of hospital proposals 'unnecessary' says health bosspublished at 11:52 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

The eight-month delay to the planned reorganisation of Shropshire's hospitals was unnecessary, the man in charge of the Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group has said.

Independent reviewers have spent that time looking at the way the NHS reached its recommendations, to see if the correct processes were followed.

    RSH sign

They were brought in after concerns were raised by Telford and Wrekin Council and the Telford and Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Group last year.

    Quote Message

In the view of Shropshire CCG, no, we didn't believe there was any real case to do an independent review. Nevertheless, when a key stakeholder raises issues of concern and the gateway review raised issues of concern, it's only right and proper that we too the time to have those concerns independently evaluated."

  10. Liverpool fans back safe standing planspublished at 11:28 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

Shrewsbury Town's plans for a safe standing area have got the backing of Liverpool fans.

Nearly 18,000 of them voted in a poll run by the club's Spirit of Shankly supporters group and 88% of them were in favour of rail seating being introduced in English grounds.

Stadiums in England's top two divisions have had to be all-seater since the 1990 Taylor Report into the Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 Liverpool fans died.

Shrewsbury are looking to be the first English club to install rail seats and are looking to raise £75,000 to install 500 of them.

  12. Delays for driving tests in countypublished at 10:41 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

    Kate Tebby
    Journalist, BBC Shropshire

Driving instructors in Shropshire say the county needs more test examiners.

Some instructors report long waiting lists for lessons, which they say is a knock-on effect of customers having to wait for tests.

One issue is that driving instructors are having to keep learners on their books until they can get a test.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency says demand for the driving test has gone up - but it's recruited 412 new examiners in the past year nationally.

It's also exploring ways to offer tests at more convenient times like evenings and weekends.

  13. Emergency centre plans: What happens next?published at 10:17 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

For almost four years now health bosses, local councils and patient groups have been trying to come to a decision about what hospital services should be based where, to make them fit for the future.

Last year an independent review of the process was ordered.

But a meeting yesterday decided that the review had not thrown up anything that would stop the process moving forward.

    Quote Message

The recommendation that goes to the joint committee will be to go out to consultation on the option to have the emergency centre at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. It is up to the joint committee to make that decision on whether to go out to public consultation or not."

David Evans, Chief officer for Telford & Wrekin CCG

  15. Council leader 'disappointed' with emergency centre planspublished at 09:36 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

Telford and Wrekin Council leader Shaun Davies says he's disappointed that the Future Fit programme board are "ploughing on" with a public consultation that he says "will offer little more than lip-service to the public"

    Shaun Daves

A meeting held yesterday recommended asking the public for their thoughts on the idea of having a single emergency centre at Shrewsbury - and basing planned care at Telford's Princess Royal Hospital.

It would mean the effective downgrade of Telford's A&E department and Women and childrens unit.

  16. Delay to college mergerpublished at 09:18 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

    James Bond
    BBC Shropshire

The merger between Telford College of Arts and Technology and New College Wellington, which should have officially taken place today, has been delayed.

The colleges say the government department responsible for signing off the arrangement is working through a backlog, caused by the snap general election.

  17. Single emergency centre plans move a step closerpublished at 08:54 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

    Elaine Muir
    Journalist, BBC Shropshire

The Future Fit programme board - the group charged with redesigning Shropshire's hospital services for the future - decided yesterday to recommend going out to public consultation.

They say the best option is to have a single emergency centre that deals with the most serious cases at Shrewsbury - with Telford having the majority of planned care, as well as a downgraded A&E and women & children's unit.

    Ambulance sign

Last year the process stalled after GPs from Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin failed to reach agreement on a preferred option, and an independent review of the process so far was ordered.
