    Part of the High Street in Market Drayton was shut off earlier, while firefighters dealt with a fire in a shop basement.

    They say it started in some light fittings and they were called out at 09:16 and had it put out in an hour.

  2. Ice hockey: Fixtures for new season releasedpublished at 12:22 British Summer Time 17 August 2017

    The fixtures are out for the new ice hockey season, external and Telford Tigers will start their campaign in the NIHL North 1 at home to Sheffield Steeldogs on 2 September.

    The two sides are familiar opponents, having both played in the English Premier League together last season, before transferring to the NIHL when it collapsed.

    They will follow that up with a visit to the national ice centre in Nottingham to play the Lions the following day, before a cup match at home to another familiar opponent, Basingstoke Bison on 10 September.

    The Tigers division 2 side will open their campaign away to Altrincham Aces, before facing Deeside Dragons second team at the Telford Ice Rink on 3 September.

    An arsonist who set fire to a car in Telford yesterday morning has been caught on CCTV.

    The fire spread to two other cars, wrecking all three and the police are appealing for help in catching the offender.

    The owner of a car destroyed by an arsonist in Telford yesterday morning says she now fears for her safety.

    Three cars were wrecked in the resulting fire and CCTV footage caught the arsonist starting it.

    Heather said she was lucky the fire didn't spread further and that it was worrying that there was someone capable of doing this.

  6. Higher proportion of Telford students pass A-levelspublished at 10:47 British Summer Time 17 August 2017

    The indications are that a higher proportion of Telford students have passed their A-levels this year, Telford and Wrekin Council has said.

    Young people have been opening their results this morning and Adams Grammar School is reporting an overall A-level pass rate of 99%.

    Shrewsbury Town manager Paul Hurst says there is more competition for places this season and that means players including Louis Dodds (pictured) might have to spend time sitting on the bench.

    The experienced striker made more than 30 appearances for the club last season, but was a substitute for the first two games of this season, before finding his way into the starting line-up against Wimbledon.

    Hurst described him as "an experienced campaigner" who "has always got the ability to pop up with a goal", but that he thinks Dodds understands the situation.

    The New Saints are hoping for a home game in the draw this lunchtime for the Irn-Bru Cup, the Scottish competition that also includes the top sides from the Welsh and Irish leagues.

    Last season, the Saints reached the semi-finals, but were drawn away in every round - to Forfar, Livingston and St Mirren.

    Shropshire Council has won a Ministry of Defence award for supporting the armed forces.

    It's one of 33 charities, local authorities, and emergency services given the Employer Recognition Scheme gold award.

    The council's been chosen because of its work to accomodate those who serve or veterans, including its partnership with RAF Shawbury. Other winners include Network Rail and the Metropolitan Police.

    The England women's rugby team will book their place in the World Cup semi finals if they beat the USA in Dublin today.

    They are the defending champions and have won their first two games at this tournament.

  11. Bishop's Castle pilot takes care into homespublished at 08:52 British Summer Time 17 August 2017

    People in the Bishop's Castle area should be able to access more care at home thanks to a pilot project which places more doctors and nurses out working in the community.

    Staff from Bishop's Castle Community Hospital will spend the next three months providing care to people at home, while the hospital is closed temporarily so the floor can be replaced.

    The project hopes to find new ways of working that could shorten or avoid hospital stays in the future.

    A feathered visitor to The Dingle in Shrewsbury is attracting a lot of interest at the moment.

    It's a night heron and they're more commonly seen in southern Europe or north Africa, so are a rare sight in the UK.

    Figures from the ONS show 164,000 people are registered as out of work across the region - an increase of 3,000 people compared with the first three months of the year.

  17. Motorcyclist dies in A41 crashpublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 16 August 2017

    A motorcyclist has died after a crash on the A41 at Prees Heath this afternoon.

    Police say the victim was a man in his 70s and he came off his bike after a collision involving two cars and a lorry.

    West Midlands Ambulance Service said he was confirmed dead at the scene.

    A Ludlow couple who lost their baby eight years ago as a result of mistakes made by the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust say it's "worrying" that the Care Quality Commission still has concerns about its maternity services.

    A CQC report published this morning criticised the management of maternity services and said the lessons of "safety incidents" were not always shared with staff and that there was a lack of post-natal ward rounds.

    Rhiannon Davies said the report showed the hospitals were "still failing on the basics" and that she felt like banging her head against a wall.

    Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt ordered an investigation into the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust in April, after the BBC revealed there had been a number of avoidable baby deaths.

    A national BMX champion from Telford is passing on his skills to pre-school children.

    Callum Edwards is helping the under-fives around a mini-track and some are venturing out on to the full-size circuit.

    The youngest child learning at his home-track in Dawley is just 18 months old.
