    In a couple of days another name will be added to the steel city's roll of honour in the form of them having their own 'star' on the pavement.

    Names already on the list include sporting stars; Jessica Ennis-Hill, Michael Vaughan and Clinton Woods.

    A boy who was severely brain damaged after being starved of oxygen at birth will not be paid compensation, a court has ruled.  

    Lawyers for Nile Weld, 16, claimed an ambulance crew wasted crucial time getting his mum Delsena Walrond to the Northern General in February 2000 after she suffered a catastrophic haemorrhage.

    It was also claimed there were further delays at hospital because doctors didn't realise how serious Ms Walrond's condition was. 

    At the High Court, Judge Jeremy Freedman was critical of the ambulance crew's record keeping and initial checks on the 19-year-old mother - but ruled the 13 minutes it took paramedics to get her into the ambulance was "reasonable".

    Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins is one of the former colleagues of murdered MP Jo Cox to attack Nigel Farage. 

    Mr Farage has been threatened with legal action over an extremism row with the widower of Jo Cox following the Berlin terrorist attack. 

    Campaign group Hope Not Hate said it had asked the former Ukip leader to apologise for suggesting its supporters "masquerade as being lovely and peaceful but actually pursue violent and very undemocratic means" or face legal action. 

    Mr Farage blamed the "open door" immigration policy of German Chancellor Angela Merkel for what happened in Berlin.

    A mother-of-five from Sheffield who's battling incurable bone marrow cancer is determined to help Sheffield Hospitals Charity, external raise the money it needs to find a cure. 

    Jaqui Copley, external has already fundraised more than £10,000 towards the appeal and the target is £90,000.

  10. Barnsley MP sounds alarm on child povertypublished at 14:32 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

    A flagship unit aimed at tackling child poverty has been disbanded by the government.

    Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis, external has joined campaign groups to warn that the government is creating more obstacles for children who are already badly disadvantaged.

    The work of the cross-department child poverty unit has now been transferred to the Department for Work and Pensions, having seen its staffing numbers halved in three years.

    A DWP spokeswoman said it was "nonsense" to suggest the government was not continuing to tackle the problem, with a new social justice paper due to be published in the new year. But the Child Poverty Action Group, external joined Mr Jarvis in criticising the move.

    There have been more than 1,000 cases of children in care going missing in South Yorkshire over the past two years - some for long periods of time, research by the BBC has found.

    There are currently about 2,000 children and young people in the care of local authorities in our county.

    Scouts and cubs have been delivering supplies to help the work of a foodbank in Shirecliffe, external.

    Sheffield's NHS Trust has been named as one of 21 across England that are owed at least £100,000 each for treating overseas patients not entitled to free healthcare.

    According to data obtained by the Press Association under the Freedom of Information Act, overseas patients have left the NHS nationally with unpaid bills of almost £30m in just one year.

    Rotherham Council says its efforts to bring fly-tippers to book continue.

    I've been told that action's being taken by the council against the owner of the yard pictured in Eastwood, which is full of rubbish. 

    It adds that it's looking at the other incident (pictured right) of furniture dumped in the street.

    A new centre to help drug addicts and alcoholics opens in Doncaster today.

    The town centre hub comes after similar centres opened in Bentley, Mexborough and Stainforth. 

    Staff at Aspire, external - which runs the new service - say more addicts are now in recovery in the borough.

    The Mayor of Doncaster has been to see work on the site of the borough's new National College for High Speed Rail, external.

    Construction began in May and its due to open next September.

    It'll train thousands of new engineers to work on developments such as the HS2 rail line.

    Eighteen new recruits are joining the police, external in South Yorkshire.

    The force is also looking for more officers, external to serve on the streets of Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster and Sheffield.

  20. Yorkshire suicide rate 'highest in England'published at 10:57 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2016

    Yorkshire has the highest rate of male suicide in England, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics. 

    Figures show 430 men in the region took their own life last year - an increase in 16.5% on 2014, when 369 men killed themselves.

    Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 across the UK.

    People are urged to seek support by the Samaritans, external.

    Luke Ambler's brother-in-law killed himself recently, prompting him to start a campaign to raise awareness of mental health issues amongst young men.
