    South Yorkshire Goalball Club, external is on the lookout for new players after it was awarded £1.3m funding from Sport England for its success in showing how the sport is transforming lives.

    The only Paralympic sport specifically designed for the blind and visually-impaired, Goalball is played using raised markings on the floor. 

    Players locate the ball through sound and blindfolds are worn to ensure everyone is in the same circumstance. This means that sighted players can also get involved at a club level.

    A Christmas strike by waste collection workers in Doncaster has been called off. 

    A deal's been agreed between council contractor Suez and members of Unite, following a walkout by staff last week in a row over pay and conditions.

    Four times as much money is to be spent on flood defences along the River Thames than on all the rivers in Yorkshire.  

    About 16,000 homes were flooded across the North of England a year ago.

    The Environment Agency said it invested money "where it will have the most benefit".

    Police are appealing for information, external following the disappearance of 42-year-old Imelda Najira from Sheffield.

    Imelda was last seen on Sunday 11 December and is thought to have links to London and Nottingham.

    Imelda was last seen wearing a knee length black coat, white and blue scarf, blue jeans, and white trainers. She had her hair tied up and was carrying a black handbag and a carrier bag.

  6. Edlington attack teenager 'could go to university'published at 14:52 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

    One of two teenage brothers convicted of a "sadistic" attack on two boys seven years ago is now a "completely different" person and could go to university, a senior judge has been told.

    The brothers were 10 and 11 when they took part in the sadistic attack in Edlington in 2009.

    Judge Sir Geoffrey Vos had made orders barring journalists from revealing the brothers' identities earlier this month at a High Court hearing in London. 

    He has now published a written ruling explaining his reasoning for making those orders saying that one of the brothers, now 18, is now a "completely different" person and could go to university. 

    Sir Geoffrey was told that the man's older brother, now 19, was "equally committed to the path of rehabilitation".

    Rotherham MP Sarah Champion is backing government plans to consider making all secondary schools teach children about pornography, sexting and the nature of consent. 

    The proposals could be included in the Children and Social Work Bill, which is currently before parliament.

    Sheffield Forgemasters' investment in future generations of employees will see the recruitment of 14 new apprentices in early 2017.

    The manufacturing giant, which produces castings and forgings for suppliers to the engineering, nuclear, and process industries, has launched its search for suitable candidates to start in the first quarter of next year. 

    Its award-winning, four-year apprenticeship programme, external is part of the company's commitment to a £1m training plan for specialist staff.

    A combination of South Yorkshire musicians and firefighters hoping to be Christmas number one are setting the charts alight.

    Red Watch from Sheffield and the Everley Pregnant Brothers performed for Look North last week and then were on national television last Friday night.

    Their charity single "chip pan" had climbed to number 15 in the charts by Saturday according to the official chart company. The Christmas number one will be revealed on Friday.

    Government cuts are hitting hard again at Rotherham Council next year. 

    Over the next three years, £43m will be sliced off the local authority's budget. Next year that means £13m in cuts and a loss of 166 jobs.

    A total of 1,500 staff have been made redundant since 2010.

    Independent traders in Barnsley say they are being put out of business as the council presses ahead with a modernisation of its shopping centre. 

    Some traders claim while market stall holders have been protected, they haven't.

    A gang of six men have admitted conspiracy to supply heroin, cocaine and cannabis after police seized £600,000 of drugs

    Their operation running drugs across Burngreave was foiled when Steven James Richards, aged 44, from Hartley Brook Road, Shiregreen, was found with 2kg of heroin when his car was stopped by police on the M1 in February. 

    Richards has been jailed for six years.

    In an undercover operation five other gang members were identified and found with heroin, a drug mixing agent and cannabis in their vehicles and at a business premises.

    The other men were

    • Farooq Khan, 31, of Denholme Close, Burngreave, jailed for 10 years
    • Marcus Nathaniel Golding, 27, of Cemetery Road, Sharrow, jailed for seven years
    • Umer Mohammed, 31, of Burngreave Road, Burngreave, jailed for five years
    • Mohammed Shafiq, 33, of The Common, Ecclesfield, jailed for six years
    • Liban Abdullah, 27, of De La Salle Drive, Pitsmoor, yet to be sentenced
