  2. Hospital apologises for death mistakespublished at 17:50 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2017

    Two patients died as a result of errors at a Sheffield hospital in the space of a fortnight.

    The incidents happened at the Northern General Hospital in March.

    They were among 29 serious untoward incidents (SUIs), including five deaths, recorded in 2016 by the NHS Trust at the five hospitals it runs across the city.

    The figures were revealed following a Freedom of Information request by the Sheffield Star newspaper, external.

  5. Sheffield is the 'least productive city'published at 17:02 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2017

    Sheffield has been found to be the least productive city in Britain, according to the Office for National Statistics.

    Once home to a huge steel industry Sheffield is now lagging well behind, being 19% less productive than the national average.

    The most productive industry is finance and that is concentrated in London, while many regions suffer from poor infrastructure and communications.

    Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal has hinted at further incomings soon with Charlton defender Morgan Fox strongly linked with a move to Hillsborough.

    Meanwhile, Rotherham United have sold midfielder Greg Halford to Cardiff City. He's agreed an 18-month deal with Neil Warnock's team.

    The Polish Ambassador is going to personally thank a South Yorkshire truck driver who led a fundraising campaign to help the family of a man who was killed in the attack on the Berlin Christmas Market.

    David Duncan, who lives in Rotherham, helped to raise nearly £190,000 in just a few weeks by setting up a crowdfunding page. 

    Lucasz Urban was shot and stabbed when his lorry was hijacked by a terrorist who drove it into the crowded market - killing 12 people.

    Mr Urban was buried last week in his home village in Poland. His funeral was attended by Polish President Andrzej Duda and a German diplomat.

  11. Sheffield MP: 'Care system in a state of crisis'published at 15:25 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2017

    The Labour MP for Sheffield South East has written to Theresa May to say there's a crisis in social care and current measures are only a 'stop gap solution'.

    Clive Betts, who chairs a parliamentary committee on local government says there needs to be a cross-party review of both the health and social care systems.

    Along with the chairs of the Health Select Committee and Public Accounts Committee, he's demanding that the government finds a long-term solution to the problems of an ageing population and increasing costs of care for older people.

  12. Jail for men who committed violent robberiespublished at 15:03 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2017

    Two men from Mexborough who carried out two violent robberies have been jailed for a combined total of nine-and-a-half years.

    Steven Thorpe, 29, from Windmill Crescent and Jordan Bailey, 19, and from New Street, carried out the two robberies on Sunday 3 July.

    In the first attack a 41-year-old man was punched repeatedly and forced to the ground before having his phone and wallet stolen.

    In the second a 19-year-old man was punched in the head and face and a 16-year-old girl was pushed in the chest before having her bag and purse stolen.

  14. Watch: Moor Market traders 'hopeful' with regenerationpublished at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2017

    Traders at the Moor Market say they're hopeful that footfall will increase when the nine-screen cinema opens in the summer.

    But with the council saying 100,000 people will shop in the market, traders have asked for reduced rent for another six months, until September 2017.

    A man has been jailed for 13 years for firearms offences after police were called to shots being fired in the car park of a Sheffield pub.

    Jamie Lee Howden, 26, of Barber Street, Barnsley, admitted possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.

    It comes after members of the public called the police to shots being fired at the Thorncliffe Arms, Chapeltown, in July last year.

    Lee Inman, 49, lost his leg after a crash crash in 2013.

    He says he's still being sent for "fit for work" assessments by the DWP, despite an independent tribunal ruling that he's unable to work.

  18. Resident-only recycling permit scheme to be introducedpublished at 13:17 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2017

    A residents-only permit scheme will be introduced for Barnsley’s four household waste recycling centres, external.

    Residents visiting a recycling centre will be issued with a car window sticker when they show a valid vehicle registration document (V5) showing registration in the Barnsley metropolitan borough area.

    The scheme will be phased in over the next three months and will become mandatory from Monday 6 March.

    Residents will be able to acquire a permit sticker on their first visit and will be required to display it in their windscreen on future visits.

  19. Amazon to open warehouse near Meadowhallpublished at 13:03 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2017

    Internet retailer Amazon UK are set to open a new warehouse near Meadowhall, serving South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire.

    The huge 134,400 sq ft building could see the internet giants provide jobs for the area.

    There are issues on trains through Sheffield today because of signalling problems.

    National Rail say trains may be amended, cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes, with disruption expected to continue until 14:00.
