    A new roof, flooring and windows are being fitted to Manor Top library as Sheffield council look to update the building and make it more energy efficient.

    The library will be closed while some of the work takes place between Monday 23 January to Sunday 5 February.

  2. Investigation after Rotherham armed robberypublished at 17:09 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2017

    A shop worker was threatened with a kitchen knife during an armed robbery at a Rotherham newsagents yesterday.

    Police are now asking the public for help after two men entered the Martin McColls newsagents in Thomas Street, Swinton, and threatened the member of staff with a red handled knife.

    It happened just before 07:00 on Wednesday 4 January, with the men making off with a small amount of cash and some cigarettes, running towards some fields at the back of Edward Street.

    The man allegedly carrying the knife is described as white, about 5ft 7ins tall, of an average build, in his 30s and spoke with a local accent.

    He was wearing a black jumper with the hood up, grey jogging bottoms, black trainers with lighter soles, black woollen gloves and a black woollen ribbed hat.

    The second man is also described as white, aged in his 30s and was wearing a long sleeved salmon coloured top.

    Almost half of all dogs in Swinton, Rotherham, are overweight according to a study by Pets at Home.

    The report says 48% of pooches in the town weigh more than they should, which is the most in the entire country.

    More than 500,000 dogs were weighed, with County Durham’s Consett being closest to their ideal weight, at just 0.99% overweight.

    Police officers in the west of Sheffield seized a van full of cannabis plants in the early hours of yesterday morning.

    One person was cautioned by police after the white van was stopped in Crookes, with several large plants in the back.

    Both occupants of the van are now facing deportation.

    Sheffield City Council have said their Streets Ahead team will be sending their gritters out this evening, after South Yorkshire has freezing temperatures forecast.

    Sixteen gritters will be working through the night to disperse around 200 tonnes of grit.

    Sheffield City Council planners have recommended that a Sheffield pub should not be turned, external into a supermarket.

    The Plough Inn, on Sandygate Road was earmarked by Sainsbury's to be turned into a local mini-market, despite strong opposition.

    But now, the council have said that the change of use to retail 'would involve the loss of a building that is considered to be a valued community asset'.

    The report goes on to say that there aren't alternative pubs in the area for people to go to.

    South Yorkshire Police have said there was a spike in hate crime incidents across the region during July last year after Britain voted to leave the European Union.

    The Ministry of Justice has confirmed a transgender prisoner, who was on remand, has been found dead in a cell at Doncaster Prison.

    Jenny Swift, 49, who was previously known as Jonathan and was from Liverpool, was charged with the attempted murder of 26-year-old Eric Flanagan at a house on Surrey Street in Balby in Doncaster in November.

    The Ministry of Justice says Jenny Swift was pronounced dead shortly after 01:00 on 30 December.

    An independent investigation will now be carried out by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.

    Sheffield City Council are to hold a public meeting tonight, to share their thoughts behind the future of the Central Library and Graves Art Gallery.

    It was reported last year that the library could be turned into a five-star hotel by a Chinese investment group.

    The council say the project is still in the very early stages, but it is clear that it could provide a unique opportunity to relocate the Central Library into a fit for purpose building.

    They say the public must pre-book their place, external as the event is likely to be very popular.
