  2. Sheffield abuse helpline extends opening hourspublished at 08:57 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    A Sheffield helpline for people affected by domestic abuse is extending its hours from today.

    The service is run by Action Domestic Abuse Services and funded by Sheffield City Council.

    Last year they took nearly 2,000 calls. It now opens until 20:00 every weeknight.

    The number is 0808 808 2241.

  3. Police appeal after fatal Doncaster crashpublished at 08:39 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    Police are appealing for more information after a 21-year-old woman died following a crash in Doncaster yesterday.

    A white Seat Ibiza and a silver Vauxhall Vectra were travelling on the A614 near Thorne on Monday morning when they collided.

    The 21-year-old woman died as a result of her injuries and a 32-year-old man was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

  4. Rotherham climber to re-attempt Everest ascentpublished at 08:29 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    A man from Wath, who abandoned an attempt to climb Everest last summer to save an injured climber, is planning to return to the mountain later this year.

    Army veteran Leslie Binns made headlines around the world when he stopped just 500m from the summit to help somebody who was sliding down the mountain.

    He's now planning a trip in April to raise money for ABF - The Soldiers' Charity.

    Rotherham and Sheffield have been named as among the first 30 councils in the country to get what the Government is calling 'starter homes'.

    The government say they'll be built exclusively for first-time buyers between 23 and 40 years old at a discount of at least 20 per cent below market value.

    Government cash will be used by councils to subsidise developments and develop mainly brownfield sites for building.
