    Today, most places will be dry with broken cloud. Some sunny intervals are likely, especially in the east. Occasional drizzle is possible on western hills. Feeling cool in brisk westerly winds.

    Tonight, cloud will thicken with occasional light rain, then becoming clearer and chillier later. An isolated shower is possible near coasts. Winds will veer northwest, becoming occasionally strong on the coast.

    Trains between London St Pancras and Sheffield have been cancelled this afternoon after a person was hit by a train between Bedford and Luton.

    Disruption is likely to last until 16:00 today.

    A 21-year-old woman who died following a crash yesterday on Selby Road, Doncaster has been named as Ellie Chappell.

    On Monday, Miss Chappell was travelling along the A614 Selby Road from Thorne, in a white Seat Ibiza, when she was in collision with a Vauxhall Vectra between Lands End Road and Ferry Road.

    Police are appealing for information.

  6. Starter homes plan in South Yorkshire 'too ambitious'published at 13:27 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    A housing expert has said that the timescale to build thousands of new homes for first-time buyers is too ambitious.

    Christine Whitehead, Emeritus Professor in housing economics at the London School of Economics, said the "timescale is much too short, it's not that easy to build on land that quickly, and we are anyway short on skills".

    Sheffield and Rotherham councils were chosen among the first 30 councils in the country to get the starter homes.

    More than 150 new places are expected to be added to a Rotherham secondary school as part of wider £7m growth plans across the borough.

    Rotherham Council is expected to agree to plans to increase capacity at Wales High School in order to accommodate the increased demand for places locally.

    Cabinet members are recommended to agree to a £1.2m expansion of Wales High School, which will be paid for from government funding, at a meeting next week, subject to planning permission.

    Commuters in Sheffield staged a protest outside Sheffield Midland station this morning in a protest against the hike in rail fares.

    Rail passengers are facing higher fares across the UK as average price increases of 2.3%.

    Natalie Bennett from the Green Party in Sheffield, said the government needs to run the rail service for passengers, not shareholders.

    A young woman from Doncaster is speaking for the first time after a holiday accident which left her fighting for her life.

    Laurie Jay Balfour, from Edlington, was on holiday in Zante when a 15-stone gas canister fell on her head.

    Doctors in Greece said she wouldn't survive.

    Laurie says she hopes the new year will bring her happiness and that she can't wait to go on holiday again.

    She still needs a metal plate to be put into her head and says that she wants to grow her hair long again when she begins her final road to recovery.

    Rail passengers are facing higher fares across the UK as average price increases of 2.3% are introduced on the first weekday of the new year.

    The increase covers regulated fares, including season tickets, and unregulated ones, such as off-peak tickets.

    Prospective parliamentary candidate for Sheffield Central Natalie Bennett says it's 'one more example of [the] failed model of privatisation of public services'.

    The government said it was delivering the biggest rail modernisation programme for more than a century.

    A disgruntled Rotherham United fan has posted the squad as being up for sale on eBay, with the post already attracting 60 bids.

    Bidding has reached more than £65,000, with £2.80 postage, and the seller says they won't accept returns.

    A Sheffield man is due to be sentenced later today after being found guilty of trying to join so-called Islamic State (IS) fighters in Iraq.

    Shivan Hayder Azeez Zangana, 21, known Azeez, was convicted at Kingston Crown Court of preparing acts of terrorism.

    Azeez, from Washington Road, Sheffield, met another man, Aras Mohammed Hamid, 26, in Birmingham on 13 May.

    They went to a travel agent to buy a plane ticket for Azeez to travel to an airport in Iraq from Gatwick.
