    An attempt to smuggle more than 11 million cigarettes into the UK was thwarted after customs officers at Felixstowe became suspicious about a container's cargo, the Home Office has revealed.

    The haul arrived at Felixstowe on a ship from Dubai. 

    The container was supposed to be full of polymer resin but instead officers found the contraband.

    It was the largest Border Force seizure of cigarettes ever made at the port and "could have cost the Treasury £3.2m in unpaid duty", the Home Office said. 

    About 900 large boxes, each containing dozens of cartons of packs of 20 cigarettes were found inside the container when officer swooped on 19 September. No arrests have been made.

    Earlier today we reported a serious road accident at Blythburgh, near Southwold.

    Now the BBC has learnt that the accident involved a motorcycle and its rider suffered serious chest and head injuries in the crash at the junction of the B1387 and the B1125 (Dunwich Road) Blythburgh at 08:56. No other vehicles were involved.

    The man has been taken to Ipswich Hospital.

    The head of a karting association has said lessons can always be learned from "rare freak accidents" following the death of a man on a track in Suffolk.

    The man in his 60s died on Sunday afternoon after a collision between two karts at Ellough Park Karting Circuit near Beccles.

    It's understood he was thrown out of his vehicle. 

    Police and council health and safety officers are continuing their investigation.

    Colin Wright, chairman of the Association of British Kart Clubs, said: "You can always have a rare accident that every risk assessment can't mitigate what is going to happen.

    "We can always learn from a rare freak accident."

    Trains between Norwich, Ipswich, Colchester and London are suffering serious disruption after a lorry hit a bridge at Romford this morning.

    Train services running through Romford are returning to normal but some services may still be delayed until early afternoon. Passengers on the Southend line are also affected. 

    "We are sorry if your journey has been affected by this problem. Network Rail engineers have worked as quickly as possible to resolve this problem and restore a normal train service," an Abellio Greater Anglia, external spokesperson said.

    A decision, due to be made today on whether to reduce or stop IVF fertility treatment available in part of Suffolk, has been deferred until January.

    The Ipswich and East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group, external (IESCCG), said on Twitter that at a meeting today "members decided to defer the decision on IVF cycles, which means IESCCG continues to offer two cycles."

    Estimates show that reducing NHS provision to one IVF cycle would save nearly £350,000 a year but cutting procedures completely would save nearly £700,000.

    A prison in Suffolk that has been transformed from a Young Offender institution to an all-adult jail is pioneering a new regime. The inmates at Warren Hill, Hollesley, near Woodbridge, are serving life or indeterminate sentences and an open prison is regarded as inappropriate.

    A report by the Independent Monitoring Board said of the new regime: "These men are released directly into the community once they have demonstrated to the Parole Board their increased sense of responsibility and reduced risk to the public."

    During the year 58% of those applying for parole were successful. The prison has a total population of 257.

    A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: "The Secretary of State is determined to make sure our prisons are safe and places of reform. Work is ongoing to address some of the concerns raised in the report.”

    Independent Monitors had criticised the education provision at the prison but admitted improvement had started under a new contractor. 

    They also said the "slow progress of building work caused long delays in providing adequate work opportunities". 

    The preparation and serving of food and the prison service's care in transferring prisoners' personal property have also been matters of concern.

    Emergency services are currently on the scene after the single vehicle accident at the junction of the B1387 and the B1125 (Dunwich Road) Blythburgh at 08:56 today.

    Witnesses are asked to call Suffolk Police. No information has yet been released on any injuries.

    The transition of Warren Hill in Suffolk from a Young Offender Institution to an adult prison has been completed but not without some setbacks, independent monitors have said in their first report.

    Inspectors made 299 visits to the prison at Hollesley, near Woodbridge, during the transition and were critical of the education provision, delays in building work and care of the inmates. 

    They conclude the small size of the prison, dedication of staff and strong leadership "produced a generally humane, enabling and purposeful culture". 

    A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: “We welcome this report which notes that Warren Hill has continued to make very good progress and supports offenders into purposeful work, thanks to the dedication and resourcefulness of staff."

    The Red House in Aldeburgh has been named by Historic England in a list of six locations across the country important for their Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender history.

    The home Benjamin Britten shared with Peter Pears is highlighted, along with Oscar Wilde's former home in west London, and the estate of "the first modern lesbian". 

    The initiative comes in the run-up to the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1967.
