Back now to our story on how no new beds will be created for people in a mental health crisis in Norfolk and Suffolk.
Richard Evans from Norwich was sent to London as there were no beds available in the local area when he went through a period of severe depression.
He found the whole process extremely disruptive while he was seriously ill.
“One evening at about nine at night I suddenly had a care worker come up to me and say 'pack your bags, you’ve got 10 minutes to leave.
'A bed space has come up in Norwich now. That’s it, you’re going.' That was very stressful. If I was in Guantanamo Bay I would probably get more than 10 minutes notice to sling my hook,” he said.
The number of “out of area” bed days reported by the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, external went up from 28 in April last year (the equivalent of one patient out of area per day) to 606 in March this year (the equivalent of 20 patients sent out of area per day).
