  1. Mental health patient tells of 'disruptive' experiencepublished at 12:03 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    Nikki Fox
    BBC Look East

Back now to our story on how no new beds will be created for people in a mental health crisis in Norfolk and Suffolk.

Richard Evans from Norwich was sent to London as there were no beds available in the local area when he went through a period of severe depression.

Richard Evans, in blue checked shirt

He found the whole process extremely disruptive while he was seriously ill.

“One evening at about nine at night I suddenly had a care worker come up to me and say 'pack your bags, you’ve got 10 minutes to leave.

'A bed space has come up in Norwich now.  That’s it, you’re going.'  That was very stressful.  If I was in Guantanamo Bay I would probably get more than 10 minutes notice to sling my hook,” he said.

The number of “out of area” bed days reported by the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, external went up from 28 in April last year (the equivalent of one patient out of area per day) to 606 in March this year (the equivalent of 20 patients sent out of area per day).

Hearts are a-flutter here among some of my colleagues at reports that Benedict Cumberbatch is currently filming in the county at Shingle Street.

  3. Community facilities 'help hospital admission'published at 11:45 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    Nikki Fox
    BBC Look East

The Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, external said it agreed with the bed review because investing in community facilities like a crisis cafe would help with preventing admission to hospital beds in the first place.

It said “beds are not the only, nor necessarily the best, solution to supporting someone in a mental health crisis... often the best outcome for a patient is achieved when they can remain within their own home, close to the people who care for or support them, with good community-based, mental health support in place.”

In board papers being discussed at a meeting in Ipswich today the trust admits that demand for adult acute beds is a “concern”.

In January 2014, health managers said that they’d stop sending people out of area within four months.  The mental health trust now says that won’t stop happening until 2018.

  6. Bed review 'making finances fit the fact'published at 10:41 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    Nikki Fox
    BBC Look East

Critics argue the bed review, external, which has cost £58,000 and taken six months to complete, is trying to make the finances fit the facts.

The Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, external spent £4.5m last year placing patients in private hospitals and hospitals outside of Norfolk and Suffolk, including places like London and Brighton.

Hellesdon Hospital, base of the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust

Terence O’Shea, from the Campaign to Protect Mental Health Services in Norfolk and Suffolk, said the conclusion didn’t make sense.

“The trust spent £740,000 last month alone sending people all round the country as there aren’t enough beds.

"You can’t spend three quarters of a million pounds in one month because you don’t have enough beds, then say you do have enough beds.”

He added: “People need treatment from the NHS, not platitudes, families and carers can make cups of tea.”

Alan Wilkinson, from KLH Architects in Ipswich, external, said: "We’re restoring as much of it as we can, bringing the swimming pools back into use, providing new wet changing areas.

"Within the space that was originally used for ladies' changing,  we're building a new health and well-being centre so the actual Lido will have all year round use, which is crucial for its viability."

Mike Read, channel swimmer and long-time supporter of plans to reopen the pool, said things are progressing wonderfully: "This consultation in my view is wonderful news.

"It's no exaggeration to say it's a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity for the people of Ipswich to see [what is being proposed] for our town."

The derelict 1930s pool, which attracted over 50,000 visitors a year in its heyday, closed 13 years ago, external amid claims it was too expensive to run.

The design proposals will be put on display at Broomhill Library from Friday until 3 May, and then move to the Castle Hill Community Centre until 6 May.

  10. 'No new beds' for people in mental health crisispublished at 09:29 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    Nikki Fox
    BBC Look East

An independent review, external has found there are enough mental health beds in Norfolk and Suffolk for people in a crisis.

That's despite the health watchdog the Care Quality Commission (CQC) saying in October they believed there was a shortage.

The review was commissioned by the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, external and CQC groups in the area.

It said a "crisis cafe" should be set up in Norwich instead which would provide support to people whose mental health condition was getting worse.  The café is planned to open by December.

The review also said there should be more community "step down" beds to help people coming out of a crisis who were not yet ready to return home.

"It's always disappointing to get an injury but if you had a giant crash, you could almost take it a little bit better and think perhaps I got lucky to get away with a dislocated hip rather than anything more serious."

"But to not even crash and make such a common error, like a little slip, and end up with one of the biggest injuries you can have is very frustrating."
