  1. Third arrest over town centre stabbingpublished at 15:26 British Summer Time 26 April 2017

    A third man has been arrested in connection with a town centre stabbing.

    Police were called to Dogs Head Street, Ipswich, at about 03:30 on 7 April.

    The victim, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.

    Officers in Cambridge, acting on behalf of Suffolk Police, arrested a 20-year-old man from Ipswich on suspicion of attempted murder this morning. 

    He is being questioned at Martlesham Police Investigation Centre.

    Two other men have previously been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. They have been interviewed and released under investigation.

    Ipswich's Jake Nicholls is refusing to give up on competing again this season, despite dislocating a hip during a recent World Championship, external race in Italy.

    The 27-year-old's described the incident, which led to his injury, as "bizarre" after his foot got stuck in some mud while turning a corner.

    "They're a little bit vague on the recovery time because the injury is so different," Nicholls told BBC Suffolk Sport. "I haven't got any breaks in the hip which is good."

    "They've said it'll be three months before I can have real impact through the hip. Taking it from that, perhaps I'll be lucky to get back on a bike in three months which will mean four months before I can race."

    Plans to build a new multi-storey car park in Ipswich have taken a step closer.

    Ipswich Borough Council's planning and development did not approve the plans for the car park off Crown Street at this morning's meeting.

    But councillors did agree officers could approve the scheme once Suffolk County Council's concerns about how pedestrians will get access to the site have been addressed. 

    A spokesman said the approval should take a couple of weeks.

    He said work on adding the 300 extra parking spaces is not expected to be delayed.

  7. PM pays tribute paid to Saffron Walden MP who is to step downpublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 26 April 2017

    Saffron Walden MP Sir Alan Haselhurst (pictured) has spoken in the House of Commons for the first time after announcing his decision to step down after 40 years representing the Essex constituency.

    Conservative MP Sir Alan, who won the seat at a by-election in 1977, asked Theresa May to back the concerns of the people of Saffron Walden, including improved rail links, increased broadband coverage and airspace noise.

    The Prime Minister replied paying "tribute to his (Sir Alan's) service not just to the people of Saffron Walden" but also to parliament where he was deputy Commons speaker between 1997 and 2010.

    She said the concerns of the people of Saffron Walden would be best addressed with a government which promoted a strong economy.

    Sir Alan, who is 79, announced his decision to step down yesterday.

  8. Sailor died from 'multiple injuries' in boiler room explosionpublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 26 April 2017

    A sailor killed by an explosion aboard a container ship docked at Felixstowe died of multiple injuries, an inquest opening heard.

    Celso Banas, 35, from the Philippines, was working on the Manhattan Bridge ship at Felixstowe Port when he died on 19 January.

    The inquest at Suffolk Coroner's Court heard he was working in the boiler room when an explosion of steam caused debris to "fly all over the place" and struck him.

    Another man was severely burned following the explosion, which happened shortly after 23:00 and could be heard as far as 10 miles away.

    A Suffolk Police investigation is ongoing, with officers working alongside the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and other agencies,

    The inquest was adjourned to 28 July.

  9. Man taken to hospital after A140 crashpublished at 12:20 British Summer Time 26 April 2017

    A man has been taken to hospital after a two-vehicle crash on the A140.

    As we reported, the incident happened at Thornham Parva, near Eye, just after 11:00.  

    Suffolk Police said the man has not been seriously injured.

    He has been taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

    The road has reopened.

  10. Chainsaw-revving pub-goer was 'foolhardy'published at 12:10 British Summer Time 26 April 2017

    The actions of a man who revved a chainsaw at a pub beer garden were "foolhardy", a court heard.

    As we've been reporting, Mark Jones, 39, of London Road South, Lowestoft, was given a 21-month suspended prison sentence for affray.

    He had drunkenly turned up outside the Wetherspoon Kings Head pub in Beccles roaring a chainsaw.

    Police were already at the scene, as he had threatened to return with the power tool after he was asked to leave the pub 15 minutes beforehand.

    During mitigation, Stephen Dyble described his actions as "foolhardy to the point of reckless". 

    "There was not a great deal of thought," he said. 

    "It must've been an alarming experience to witness but there was no suggestion it was being brandished and it was not being thrust towards anybody."

    Breaking

    The A140 is closed in both directions at Thornham Parva near Eye after a two vehicle crash. 

    Emergency services, including four fire crews and the air ambulance, are on the scene. 

    There are large tailbacks in both directions at the moment.

  13. Man who 'revved chainsaw' outside pub spared jailpublished at 11:19 British Summer Time 26 April 2017

    A man who displayed "lunatic behaviour" by drunkenly turning up to a beer garden revving a chainsaw has been spared jailed.

    Mark Jones, 39, of London Road South, Lowestoft, pleaded guilty to affray after an incident on 10 December.

    Ipswich Crown Court heard he had been at the Wetherspoon Kings Head pub in Beccles. 

    When he was asked by door staff to leave, he said he would return with a chainsaw. He returned 15 minutes later, "roaring the chainsaw".

    Sentencing him, Judge David Goodin said it was "lunatic behaviour".

    He said: "The thought of a big man, which you are, drunk at a pub with a chainsaw roaring, is almost unimaginably frightening."

    Jones was sentenced to 21 months in prison suspended for two years. He was also given a curfew between 22:00 and 06:00 seven days a week.

    Plans to build a new multi-storey car park in Ipswich could be given the green light.

    It would be just off Crown Street, on Claude Street, where a previous car park was knocked down seven years ago due to structural issues.

    Under the plans, the new car park would add 300 extra parking spaces.

    The proposals, external will be discussed by Ipswich Borough Council's planning and development committee this morning.

    They have been recommended for approval.

    An inquest into the death of a man who died when there was an explosion on a container ship will be opened today.

    Manhattan Bridge was docking at the Port of Felixstowe just before midnight on 19 January when a boiler back-fired.

    Celso Banas, 35, from the Philippines, was killed and another person was taken to hospital.

    The inquest will be opened at Suffolk Coroner's Court today.

  19. Tour of Britain: From the heart of horse racing to a coastal gempublished at 08:55 British Summer Time 26 April 2017

    The Suffolk Tour of Britain stage will go from Newmarket to Aldeburgh.

    Riders will tackle a 114-mile (183km) route which will see them whizz through Mildenhall, Bury St Edmunds, Eye and Framlingham.

    The colourful peloton will then skirt Ipswich before heading out to Saxmundham and Leiston, finishing on Aldeburgh's high street.

    Suffolk's stage will be the sixth in the week-long event and will be held on Friday, 8 September.

    Mick Bennett, race director of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain, external, said: "This year's route will enable us to visit new locations for the race, from the famous horse racing centre of Newmarket to the picturesque coastal town of Aldeburgh, via some of the areas most picturesque towns and villages.”
