"Despite some Conservatives talking tough, no action has been taken to convince me that they have any intention of supporting the industry or reclaiming our waters," he said.

She said: "It really upset me to come here because I live locally and I've got an older daughter who's eight and it's nice just to be able to walk down here and just have a bit of peace and quiet and just think about Ruby.

"For me it's a place I can come and remember him on special occasions. If my family are visiting, it's one place we can come together.

"I came here the other day with my aunty who'd visited from Surrey specifically to see the tree.

"She'd travelled two hours and we came here to show her the leaf and I couldn't find it so that's when I got in contact with the ladies at the hospital.

"I was trying not to think it had been vandalism, maybe it had just broken off.

"I was feeling upset for myself because this month marks his fourth birthday but also really upset for my family that'd come specifically to see it and found that it wasn't here.

"I'll still come here...it's very symbolic for me and it's still a beautiful place for me to come and remember my son."

Jacko Jackson, the charity's welfare field officer who helped co-ordinate the rescue, said it's vital for a young foal to receive colostrum over their first 24 hours as it contains antibodies that help protect them from illness and disease.

As they have no idea where the young horse did receive any colostrum, his prognosis is quite guarded and they'll be watching his progress over the next few days.
