  1. Ipswich mugger fails to cut 'vicious' robbery jail sentencepublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 10 May 2017

A "vicious" beggar-turned-mugger - furious after being offered a "derisory" pound coin by his victim - has been told today his six-year jail term was not too harsh.

    London's Appeal Court

Darren John Mellor, 38, of Burkefield Drive, Ipswich, was one of three men who attacked a man in a Great Yarmouth street in 2014.

The victim - who suffered a broken arm in the ensuing attack - had been begged to hand over money for for food, but Mellor became enraged when he donated a "derisory sum", London's Appeal Court (pictured) heard.

The man was robbed, knocked to the ground, hit with a walking stick and repeatedly kicked.

Mellor was jailed last July after he pleaded guilty at a late stage to robbery, but his lawyers argued he had been punished too severely compared to his co-accused and was not given enough credit for pleading guilty.

But Mrs Justice Andrews, sitting at London's Criminal Appeal Court, said Mellor played a "leading role" and "he was the one who carried out the theft".

  20. Lack of rainfall critical for cropspublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 9 May 2017

After the driest winter for 20 years, and one of the driest Aprils on record, farmers are concerned that another week without rain could be critical for early crops.

Andrew Blenkiron is the manager of Euston Estate, on the Norfolk/Suffolk border near Thetford.

Their 100 acre field of carrots have been in since the middle of January, and already he's had to apply two inches of water.

Hand holding a small carrot, above soil

The estate has built two large reservoirs (one is pictured) to help manager water resources - and each takes several years to gain planning permission.

"We don't know if we're going to get a dry summer, but if we do and we move in to a second really dry winter, then we have real concerns because we'll have limited ability to fill our reservoirs through next winter."

Farmers talk of a five year cycle - 2012 saw a hosepipe ban in this part of the world followed by record levels of rain - it was known as the wettest drought in history.
